Improving emotional health

ARC Future Fellow and Centre for Emotional Health Director Professor Jennifer Hudson is working to stamp out childhood anxiety. Through international collaboration with more than 15 different institutions and anxiety clinics from around the world, the team is able to create tailored, individualised treatment for children with anxiety disorders.

“If we can improve the emotional health of young people, then we can have an impact on individuals across their lifespan – improving their life satisfaction, their happiness and their emotional health,” Hudson says.

Our healthy people future-shaping research priority focuses on the themes of pioneering health, integrated healthcare and lifelong learning for wellness in our ageing world.

Pedagogies for health and lifelong learning

Our cross-disciplinary research teams investigate and design pedagogies that engage and educate Australians across their lifespan. We develop and use technology to create and deliver resources and interventions in diverse fields such as mental health, rehabilitation, business, mathematics, science, literacy, speech and communication.

Health and resilience

We examine the complex and interrelated factors that influence human health and resilience. In developing and evaluating targeted interventions, we promote emotional and physical wellbeing across the lifespan. We also seek to enhance the productivity and sustainability of health care systems, supporting national wellbeing and improving resource allocation.

Translational medical research

Our clinical scientists work within cross-disciplinary research teams to build discovery pipelines to address clinical needs. Determining the fundamental origins of diseases, we translate our insights into the next generation of clinical solutions for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

Sensory and cognitive processing

We seek to understand the neural and cognitive mechanisms used to interpret the world around us. In understanding what leads to normal, exceptional or disordered processing, we can develop strategies and treatments to improve lives.

Hearing, language and literacy

We explore the processes of hearing, language and literacy acquisition across contexts and cultures. With insight into the ways people express their meanings and intentions, we design evidence-based strategies for education, training and clinical intervention. We also use cognitive models to guide our research in understanding the processes of hearing, reading and spelling as well as the causes, treatment and assessment of developmental and acquired hearing, reading and spelling disorders.
