COLLABORATING TO UNDERSTAND READING AND ITS IMPAIRMENTS, AND TO SUPPORT EVIDENCE-BASED ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION

Reading is a most remarkable human ability. It unlocks for the reader a world of ideas and information, providing a gateway to education, employment, and cultural engagement. The Macquarie University Centre for Reading (MQCR) brings together a critical mass of researchers from across a range of disciplines to understand the complex process of reading. We focus on four key themes:

  • Processes in skilled reading;
  • Learning to read in children and adults;
  • Reading difficulties and their treatments, and
  • Spelling and writing

As well as advancing knowledge in these areas, the MQCR has mechanisms to directly translate research findings into practice. Our Macquarie University Reading Clinic offers assessments and intervention for people with reading and spelling difficulties, as well as professional development for those working with these individuals. Through our web-based platform - the Macquarie Online Test Interface (MOTIf) - we make a suite of bespoke reading and spelling assessment tools freely available to teachers and other professionals.

The MQCR’s concentration of research expertise, together with its mechanisms for translation, make it unique in the world.
