Pushing the boundaries of language sciences research to improve how we communicate.

The Centre for Language Sciences (CLaS) brings together researchers who work on theoretical and experimental issues in child language acquisition, psycholinguistics, speech and hearing science, brain imaging and computational linguistics.

The primary focus for our renewal period of 2019-2021 is to study child language development in children and young people with hearing loss. Our research team for this project draws on expertise from members in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Educational Studies and Computing.

World-class research facilities

We have access to the world’s first child whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system – which is also currently the only child MEG facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other facilities that CLaS and linguistics PhD students can access are:

  • child language acquisition laboratory
  • child phonology laboratory
  • eye tracking labs
  • speech laboratories (speech movement/kinematics, electropalatography, ultrasound, oral and nasal airflow)
  • sound-treated recording studios
