New PhD scholarships

Covid-19 research focus

The Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) is pleased to announce the release of five new domestic PhD scholarships, focussing on research into Covid-19 and health system crisis planning.

With a track record of delivering internationally significant research, AIHI leads in understanding responses to the pandemic along with preparing for future health crises. The directors, Professors Johanna Westbrook, Jeffrey Braithwaite and Enrico Coiera (pictured L-R), are seeking suitably qualified candidates with pioneering ideas for research in this field.

Examples of AIHI research include the just-released, ground-breaking study involving 40 countries, assessing their capacity to handle the pandemic and manage its consequences. Also, researchers have used artificial intelligence to help diagnose COVID-19 and worked closely with chronically ill patients to understand how the pandemic has challenged the way they manage their own care. Further, in an international collaboration, AIHI have surveyed thousands of frontline healthcare workers from 97 countries to investigate their personal experiences, delivering a rich, in-depth understanding of the pandemic.

There are FIVE scholarships available with the PhD topic to be determined taking into account the interests, experience, and prior training of the successful candidate.

Topics might include but are not limited to:

  • Addressing safety and ethics of AI in healthcare
  • Applying and evaluating AI technologies to improve clinical decision-making
  • Co-designing and investigating the role of digital health with consumers
  • Development of technologies for rapid, large-scale screening and monitoring of COVID-19 using smartphones and activity trackers
  • Evaluating health communication strategies and teamwork during a crisis
  • Evaluating how hospital clinical information systems were adapted to support work
  • Optimizing virtual services to support out of hospital care in a crisis
  • Understanding the experience of healthcare workers during COVID-19
  • Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older people in residential care and in the community
