New MND funding announced

NHMRC Ideas Grants awarded

A team from the Macquarie University Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research and the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Dr Kelly Williams, Dr Lyndal Henden and A/Prof Shlomo Berkovsky, have been awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Ideas Grant for motor neuron disease (MND) research.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said Australia continues to take a lead role in improving the lives of patients around the world through health and medical research.

“These projects demonstrate the outstanding innovation of the health and medical research sector in Australia and offer great promise for future advances in our understanding and management of health challenges,” Minister Hunt said.

The team was awarded $1.165 million for the project: When sporadic disease is not sporadic - exploiting Cryptic Relatedness to unravel MND genetics.

Around 2000 people in Australia live with MND which is a progressive terminal neurological disease with no known cure.
