English language requirements

COVID-19 Important Updates

To provide flexibility and support to you during this period, Macquarie University will be accepting the following English language tests for students impacted by the closure of testing centres and applying for entry in 2020 and the first half of 2021:

For students applying for 2020 entry, we will also consider as valid any results from an accepted test (IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson, Cambridge, or OET) that was completed within the last 3 years rather than the usual 2 years.

For China region only

As mainland China is not currently serviced by IELTS or TOEFL testing, Macquarie University will be accepting the Duolingo English Test as an alternative means of meeting our Academic English requirements for this region only - see the relevant sections below for minimum score requirements.

The Duolingo test will be accepted until 31 December, 2020 for students applying from China for admission in 2020 or the first half of 2021. Continued acceptance will be reviewed subject to availability of IELTS or TOEFL testing in China.

All applicants need to provide evidence of English language proficiency. However, not all programs require the same level of English proficiency.

Most coursework programs at Macquarie require Standard English (equivalent to an overall Academic IELTS of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band), while certain programs have Special English requirements (equivalent to an overall Academic IELTS greater than 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each band).

Students applying for Foundation or Diploma programs at the Macquarie University International College (MUIC) will need to meet MUIC English requirements.

You can find the Academic IELTS English requirements for your program on either Coursefinder or Handbook and then reference the tables below to find alternative tests and scores accepted by Macquarie University.

Standard English requirements

Most coursework programs at Macquarie University require Standard English (ie, an overall Academic IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band). The tables below outline other evidence accepted by Macquarie University as meeting the Standard English language requirements.

Students who do not meet the English language requirements, but who are otherwise eligible for a program of study, may be issued an offer of study that includes an English preparation program at the Macquarie University English Language Centre (ie, a packaged offer). International students with a packaged offer can apply for a single student visa covering both their English preparation program and their course of study at Macquarie University.

Approved Qualification

An approved qualification with English as the language of instruction

Macquarie will accept certain qualifications with English as the language of instruction or other approved English units as evidence of meeting standard English requirements. Approved qualifications may only be considered if they have been successfully completed within five years of the date the applicant will start the course at Macquarie University.

This limitation period does not apply to applicants who:

  1. Meet the minimum institutional English language requirements AND can show evidence that they have continuously resided in an English-speaking country or region since the completion of their English studies until commencing studies at Macquarie University; OR
  2. Completed their secondary studies in English under the GCE Advanced (A-Levels), Advanced Subsidiary (AS-Levels) and Ordinary Levels (O-Levels / GCSE), or International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum with the required results.
