Prof Artur Davoyan, Samueli School of Engineering, UCLA, gave an engaging and inspiring talk on the potential for nanophotonics to enable interplanetary or even interstellar space travel! Artur's analysis of power to weight ratios and his use of atomically thin semiconductor layers for power generation on satellites offer convincing improvements to performance. But he had physicists and engineers alike fascinated with the idea of sending a light-powered sail all the way to Alpha Centauri!
