Dr Jarryd Pla, Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, UNSW, gave a fascinating seminar on how microwave parametric amplifiers can detect weak microwave signals with very low noise for a combined MQ Photonics and Centre for Quantum Engineering seminar. Jarryd highlighted some interesting parallels between microwave and optical parametric amplifiers based on chi2 and chi3 processes. Implementing quantum noise squeezing in a kinetic inductance parametric amplifier (KIPA), he has obtained impressive agreement between experimental results and theoretical models!
