A terrific talk by Dr David Martinez Martin (University of Sydney) explaining how to measure the mass of individual cells and monitor their growth over time with amazing accuracy. David used the simple physics concept of a damped harmonic oscillator to analyse his measurements. He monitored the dynamics of cells growing and dividing and demonstrated that both of these processes stopped when the cell was infected by a virus.
