Dr Changxu Liu (Northumbria University) gave a stimulating and interesting presentation on Bio-inspired photonics for a sustainable future. Changxu combines structures from nature with disorder, to inspire new nanophotonic devices targeting the UN Sustainability Goals on Clean water and Clean energy. He cleverly uses randomness - taking advantage of naturally occurring fabrication disorder to improve the function of his devices.
