Saurabh Bhardwaj gave a nice introduction to using femtosecond-laser writing to create point-by-point Bragg gratings in few-mode optical fibres, which have many potential applications as sensors and mode couplers. Small tweaks to the phase relationship between the grating features, or the spatial position of the grating features, lead to interesting perturbations of the rich and complex spectral properties of these fibre gratings, which Saurabh is seeking to understand and control.
