A child's early years are crucial in laying a firm foundation for developing resilience, self-esteem and the capacity to learn.
Mia Mia policies
Our policies are based on best-practice research, educational theory and practice and provide a sound framework in which families, staff and children can interact cooperatively and equitably. Families are invited to share in policy development and evaluation.
Important issues covered in our policies include confidentiality and privacy, gender equity and social justice, illness and infection control, nutrition and food allergy and intolerance, photographs and video usage, research, visitor interaction and waiting list, attendance pattern and workplace health and safety.

The Early Years Learning Framework
Outlines the principles, practices and outcomes essential to young children's learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school. It is part of the Australian Government's National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care.
The framework emphasises play-based learning, the importance of communication and language (including literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development. The five learning outcomes it defines are:
- Children have a strong sense of identity.
- Children are connected with, and contribute to, their world.
- Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.
- Children are confident and involved learners.
- Children are effective communicators.
These include seven areas (known as quality areas) against which early childhood education centres are assessed. The standard helps families to be involved in the ongoing quality development of their early childhood education service.
This year Mia Mia exceeded the standard in each of the seven quality areas.
This provides the legislative foundation for the National Quality Framework.
These set out the National Quality Standard for all education and care services.
The NSW Curriculum Framework
Prior to the Early Years Learning Framework the NSW Curriculum Framework influenced our work and the principle of the importance of relationships is still relevant to our practice.

Theorists that shape our professional practice and thinking include Harraway, Urban, Dahlberg, Moss and Pence, Gardner, Bruner, Bronfenbrenner, Malaguzzi, Eisner, Degotardi, Vygotsky, Dewey, Piaget, Froebel, Steiner, Cannella, Silin, Tobin, Costa and Kallick and philosophers such as Rinaldi and many
