Webinar - Using research evidence to improve Australian aged care: funding, staff ratios and public reporting

Speaker: Professor Kathy Eagar is Professor of Health Services Research, Director of the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) and Executive Director of the Australian Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration (PCOC).

This AIHI Webinar with Professor Kathy Eagar will describe the research undertaken by the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) University of Wollongong that was the basis of three key recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission. All three recommendations have been adopted by the government with implementation plans announced as part of the May 2021 federal budget. AHSRI designed a new classification and funding model for residential aged care called the Australian National Aged Care Classification. This will be implemented in 2022. AHSRI also undertook research commissioned by the Royal Commission on mandated staff ratios and on the need for public reporting. Progressive implementation of both will begin in 2022.

About the speaker

Professor Kathy Eagar is Professor of Health Services Research, Director of the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) and Executive Director of the Australian Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration (PCOC). Now in its 16th year, PCOC is funded by the Australian government as a national program that is fundamental to the delivery of palliative care in Australia.

In addition to PCOC, Kathy is also executive director of two other Australasian outcome centres - the Australasian Rehabilitation Outcomes Centre (AROC), and the electronic Persistent Pain Outcomes Collaboration (ePPOC). She has authored over 500 papers on management, quality, outcomes, information systems and funding of health and community care systems.
