About the seminar

This unique and powerful seminar will enhance your understanding of the importance of patient voices in healthcare quality and safety. With over 40 years’ experience as a patient advocate, Maureen explores the possibilities of including patients in medical research, her work on quality and safety, the pitfalls of informed consent and the power of patient narrative in healthcare.

Speaker profile

Maureen is a patient advocate with more than 40 years’ experience in the health system. She lives with Addison’s disease and has been admitted to the emergency department well over 100 times.

She is a passionate advocate for the patient voice and has been involved with many colleges, institutions and patient groups. She has worked on Patient Safety and Quality Standards for the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and has been involved in medical research with Macquarie, Sydney, Melbourne and Monash Universities, including serving on the steering committee of the NHMRC-funded project on test result management, communication and follow-up of the Diagnostic Informatics team at the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation.

She is a patient advocate on an Innovations and Systems Working Group for the International Society for Quality in Health Care and is on a working committee for Australian Diagnostic Error Conferences. Maureen had a career as a classical singer and voice therapist.

She has a postgraduate diploma in Counselling and Communication and has used this in working in trauma and medical issues. She is currently studying for a Masters of Public Health.
