The typical life-cycle of a clinical algorithm remains: train on historical data, publish a good receiver-operator curve, and then collect dust in the ‘model graveyard’. This begs the question: if model performance is so promising, why is there such a chasm between development and deployment?

In order to bridge this implementation gap, our focus must shift away from optimizing an AUC toward three more practical aspects of model design: actionability, safety and utility. These same principles apply in this new era of LLMs.

This presentation will focus on three (often-overlooked) components of algorithm design and provide template use-cases for future machine learning research using clinical data.

Speakers are Professor Farah Magrabi, Australian Institute of Health Innovation, and Dr Martin Seneviratne – co-chairs of MEDINFO 2023, the World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics.

Speakers:

Farah Magrabi is a Professor of Biomedical and Health Informatics at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation. She is an internationally recognised expert in the design and evaluation of digital health and artificial intelligence technologies for clinicians and consumers.

Martin Seneviratne is a doctor turned data scientist, specialising in machine learning over electronic health records (EHR). For the past four years, he worked at Google Health and DeepMind on EHR projects. Prior to Google, Martin was a research fellow in biomedical informatics at Stanford and worked as a junior doctor in NSW Health.
