New NHMRC Investigator Grant Funding

Aged care and healthcare AI researchers top the field for Federal funding

Three researchers at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), Macquarie University, have been recognised as top of their field in the latest round of federal research funding.

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator Grants have been awarded to three outstanding researchers from AIHI in the fields of artificial intelligence, aged care and injury management. The grants were announced today by the Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Greg Hunt.

Internationally recognised informatics expert, Professor Enrico Coiera was awarded $1.5 million for the project: Bringing artificial intelligence into the real world of healthcare - the implementation challenge.

Patient safety expert, Dr Kate Churruca was awarded $650,740 for the project: Building a culture of safety in Australian residential aged care facilities.

Implementation science specialist, Dr Mitchell Sarkies was awarded $617,583 for the project: Implementing and scaling an evidence-informed model for hip fracture management: harnessing implementation science for complex adaptive healthcare systems.

This brings to six the total number of NHMRC Research Fellows at AIHI, an outstanding achievement, according to Founding Director Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite.

NHMRC Investigator Grants are awarded to academics who are amongst the very best researchers in the country, and genuine leaders in their field. We welcome the recognition for the Institute and these high calibre individuals.

“These new grants expand on our current areas of expertise, within a broad portfolio of research that makes a real change to the way patients are kept safe within the health system, and improves the quality of care that is delivered by all parts of the system.”

NHMRC Fellowship positions at AIHI are also held by Professor Braithwaite, Professor Johanna Westbrook and Dr Magda Raban.
