Medical Informatics - the first 50 years

Internationally renowned medical Informatics leaders, Professor Enrico Coiera and Associate Professor Terry Hannan, feature in the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) first published history book released in November 2021.

The online publication of “International Medical Informatics and the Transformation of Healthcare”, is IMIA’s first edition of its history and impact spanning over 50 years.

The editorial preface comments that “Medical informatics has evolved and expanded over the past half century into a field that embraces a wide range of scientists, professionals, and clinical practitioners who have helped transform healthcare and its underlying biosciences.

This book details the unique perspectives and insights of many of the pioneers and leaders who have helped form, organize, and expand the field on a worldwide basis through the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and its member organizations.”

A doctor treats one patient at a time. If you could build a machine that treated many patients, you could touch the lives of thousands at a time. With that thought, I decided to pause my clinical training and learn both about computer science and how it could be applied to medicine. Enrico Coiera
