AIHI invited to present at WHO health ministers summit, Japan

Professors Braithwaite and Westbrook are the only Australian academics presenting at the global conference

Health ministers and policy makers from around the world will attend the WHO 3rd Global Ministerial Summit in Japan at which Professors Braithwaite and Westbrook will present key findings from the work of their teams.

Research leadership and political commitment for patient safety will be on the agenda when delegates from more than 40 countries meet in Tokyo, Japan on 13 and 14 April 2018.

Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, Founding Director of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) and Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University, will present ‘Safety-I, Safety-II and the resilience of healthcare’. Professor Braithwaite is also on the expert panel to discuss the topic, ‘Patient Safety Culture’.

Professor Braithwaite said “We know that rates of patient harm in hospitals remains stubbornly at 10%. We need new ideas and innovation in thinking to bring this number down."

“The AIHI is a leader in health systems research and we look forward to sharing our insights but also learning from the perspective of others from around the world."

Professor Johanna Westbrook, also a Director of AIHI, will speak on ‘Evaluating the effects of health information technology’ and is on the expert panel for the discussion on ‘Information and Communication Technology in Patient Safety’.

Professor Westbrook said “While information technology, particularly in the form of electronic medical records, offers many benefits to modern health systems, resources must also be directed to regular monitoring mechanisms that feed into system wide improvement. There must also be investment to quantify how information technology is enhancing care for patients and work practices for professionals.”
