Abstract

This presentation will summarise a background report prepared for the 2nd Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, Bonn in March 2017. It first estimates the health, financial and economic costs of patient harm across the globe. It then examines how patient harm can be minimised effectively and efficiently, informed by a snapshot survey of a panel of eminent academic and policy experts in patient safety. The presentation will also outline the current OECD work program on safety and quality indicators and health statistics more broadly.

Speaker profile

Luke Slawomirski is a health economist and policy analyst with the OECD Health Division in Paris, France. Previously he has worked with the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, and the Western Australian Department of Health on a variety of healthcare quality improvement programs including clinical variation, open disclosure, pay for performance and surgical safety. He is a former clinician and Visiting Fellow at University of Technology Sydney.
