Title

Delivering best practice in Germany: specialist multidisciplinary care for motor neurone disease patients

Speakers

Johannes Dorst and MND clinic team, Department of Neurology, University of Ulm, Germany.

Abstract

The multidisciplinary team from the Department of Neurology of the University of Ulm specialises in motor neurone disease (MND) care. Ulm has one of the largest MND clinics in Germany and Europe, led by medical director Professor Albert Ludolph.

The work undertaken by the Clinic for Neurology includes research, teaching and outpatient care of neurological diseases at the University of Ulm. The Clinic specialises in neurodegenerative diseases; in particular, motor neuron disease, Parkinson 's disease, atypical Parkinsonian syndromes, Huntington's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Funded by a grant from the "Care for Chronic Diseases" program, the team will visit Australia to compare the structures, processes and outcomes for patients with MND. The presentation will give insight into the funding, organisational and socio-cultural contexts of service delivery in Germany.

Johannes and team will demonstrate how multidisciplinary care for MND patients is delivered using several short videos about the clinic and about the daily work of each profession. The team is looking forward to discovering and discussing the similarities and differences and between German and Australian MND service delivery, and the nuances of evidence-based practice.
