Sentence Recognition with Categorial Grammar and Haskell

Victor R. Essers
MRI Language Technology Group, Department of Computing, Macquarie University

When: Monday, 11th March 1996

Time: 2:00pm

Where: Room E6A357, Macquarie University

Abstract:

I discuss how the linguistic field of Categorial Grammar and the Haskell programming language combine to produce a flexible, powerful mechanism for parsing phrases or whole sentences in natural language. Both disciplines are well suited to parsing natural language, containing declarative, functional expressions which are easily proved mathematically. I demonstrate the parsing process using examples from English.

This is Victor's 1995 BSc Honours thesis, supervised by Dr. R. Lyndon While and Dr. Sheldon P. Harrison.
