2020

  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a presentation “Perspectives on Challenges and opportunities in the Asian Region” (invited presentation at the Asian Regional Civil Society Workshop and Strategy Meeting on Plant Variety Protection, Seeds and Farmers’ Rights, Association for Plant Breeding for the Benefit of Society and Third World Network, Penang, Malaysia, 16 January 2020)
  • On 27 August, Professor Christoph Antons presented an invited paper on ‘The Commercialisation of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Indonesia’ via video link at the 5th Biennial Conference of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies at University College London.
  • Together with several other experts on Asian intellectual property law, Professor Antons was interviewed for an article on ‘Teaching IP’ in the online journal Asia IP.
  • Professor Antons’ recent book chapter on ‘Farmers as Researchers: Government Regulation of Farmers’ Local Knowledge in Indonesia’ (co-authored with Yunita Winarto, Adlinanur Prihandiani and Sinta Uli at the University of Indonesia) has been recommended in the Newsletter of the Association for Plant Breeding for the Benefit of Society.

2019

  • In May, Professor Christoph Antons visited the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology MARA in Shah Alam, Malaysia, and the Faculty of Law at Singapore Management University in Singapore. He gave presentations on his research to undergraduate and postgraduate students of intellectual property
    law at both institutions.
  • Prof. Christoph Antons presented a paper “Intellectual property, cultural property and intangible cultural heritage” (invited presentation at the School of Law, Singapore Management University, Singapore, 21 May 2019)
  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a presentation “Dampak dari Free Trade Agreements dan reformasi hukum nasional terhadap inovasi dan pengetahuan lokal petani di Indonesia: masalah regulasi” (invited presentation at the workshop “The Impact of Free Trade Agreements and national law reforms on farmers’ innovation and local knowledge in Indonesia’, University of Indonesia, Jakarta, 15 July 2019)
  • Professor Antons received a grant from the World Technology Universities Network for a joint research meeting with Professor Charlotte Waelde and Dr Harriet Deacon of Coventry University to discuss possible future project applications related to their research on intangible
    cultural heritage.
    The researchers met at the Coventry University London Campus on 23 September. The meeting was followed by Professor Antons’s seminar presentation on ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage, Intellectual Property and the Politics of Development’. The seminar was organised by the Enredados Network, a network
    of policymakers, academics and practitioners in the field of intellectual property and intangible cultural heritage.
  • While in Europe, Professor Antons also presented a paper on ‘Agricultural transformation and government regulation of farmers’ local knowledge in Indonesia’ at the 4th Annual Conference of the Law and Development Research Network (LDRN) at Humboldt University in Berlin. Speakers from 39 countries attended
    this conference on ‘The Plurality of Law and Development’.
  • As part of his three-year appointment at the University of Technology MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia, Professor Antons visited the Faculty of Law in Shah Alam, Selangor, from 11 to 16 November. He presented guest lectures in two IP courses and gave a public seminar at the Business Innovation and Technology
    Commercialization Centre (BITCOM), which is under the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation). This seminar was followed by a meeting with MARA staff involved in research coordination and commercialisation.
  • In November and December, the project hosted a visitor from the Faculty of Law of Airlangga University in Surabaya, Indonesia. Associate Professor Mas Rahmah Arifin was in Australia to collaborate on publications on Indonesian intellectual property law with Professor Antons. Professor Rahmah is the
    Head of the Centre of Intellectual Property and of the postgraduate law program at Airlangga.

  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a presentation “Intellectual property related to plant material and Free Trade Agreements in Asia” (invited seminar presentation at the Workshop on Institutions and Socio-Economic Development, Faculty of Business and Law, University of Newcastle, 4 April 2018)
  • Professor Christoph Antons was a keynote speaker at the 2nd International Conference on Law, Governance and Globalization organised by the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University, Surabaya on 28 August.
  • Prof. Christoph Antons presented a paper “Intellectual property and the business of intangible cultural heritage in Asia: cross-border disputes and community concerns” (paper presented at the 4th Biennial Conference of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 5 September 2018)
  • Professor Antons delivered a public lecture on ‘Intellectual property, agriculture and Free Trade Agreements’ at the Jakarta campus of Gadjah Mada University on 14 September. The presentation was hosted and introduced by Professor M Hawin of the Gadjah Mada Law Faculty. He was speaking at a panel on ICH Safeguarding and IP protection.
  • Professor Antons and PhD student Prayudi Setiadharma visited Indonesia in December 2018 to conduct research. They met with with Director General Dr Freddy Harris and his staff from the Indonesian IP office (Directorate General of Intellectual Property), as well as Ministerial staff, personnel from
    government R&D and regulatory agencies, collective management organisations, trade associations, R&D managers and company CEOs, NGOs, authors, artists and producers, intellectual property practitioners and academics in Jakarta and in the major cities of Java and Sumatra.

2017

  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a presentation “Developing evidence-based approaches to law reform in postcolonial societies: lessons from international and comparative law research” (with Amy Maguire; presentation at the Symposium on Evidence-Based Law and Practice, Newcastle Law School, University of Newcastle, 22 May 2017)
  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a public lecture “Hak atas kekayaan intelektual dan warisan tak benda” (“Intellectual property rights and intangible cultural heritage”; public lecture at the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia, 1 August 2017)
  • Professor Insan Budi Maulana, an Indonesian IP expert, presented a staff seminar about ‘Trademark Protection in Indonesia’ on 12 October. He discussed the revised Indonesian Trade Marks Act of 2016 as well as jurisprudence in trademark law. Professor Maulana is a Patent Attorney and teaches IP law at
    the University of Indonesia and Trisakti University in Jakarta and at the University of Sebelas Maret in Solo, Central Java.
  • Professor Christoph Antons delivered a keynote presentation on ‘Copyright Law Reform and Asian Development’ during the 3rd Annual Conference of the Asian Pacific Copyright Association held at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) on 30 October.
  • During the 3rd Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Colloquium of UoN Faculty of Business and Law on 7 November, Professor Antons presented a keynote paper on ‘Intellectual Property Law Reform and Asian Development’.
  • Professor Antons was appointed as Visiting Professor at the Singapore Management University from 7 to 12 December. Professor Antons also participated in the conference on ‘The Future of Asian Trade Deals and Intellectual Property’ on 8 December and presented a public lecture on ‘Copyright Law Reform
    and Asian Development’ at the Applied Research Centre for Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia (ARCIALA) on 11 December.

2016

  • Prof. Christoph Antons delivered a presentation “Cross-border implications of intellectual and cultural property in intangible cultural heritage” (invited seminar at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, 15 September 2016)
  • Professor Christoph Antons contributed to the Declaration on Patent Protection - Regulatory Sovereignty under TRIPS, sponsored by the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich.
    “This Declaration seeks to clarify some of the regulatory options States still retain under international law, in particular the TRIPS Agreement”.
