Macquarie University Ukraine PhD Scholarship

This scholarship is for Ukrainians whose PhD study, or plans for further study, have been disrupted by the war.

Macquarie University will provide up to five scholarships for qualified PhD applicants from Ukraine.

Availability

The scholarship is available to candidates who are eligible in accordance with our Research Training Program Scholarship Policy.

Eligible candidates:

  • are citizens of Ukraine, currently residing offshore
  • meet the admission criteria or are otherwise qualified to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy program
  • intend to reside in Sydney, Australia during their candidature
  • meet the English Language Requirement for Macquarie University research degrees
  • have confirmation of supervision from an eligible Macquarie University researcher (desirable).

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • are receiving another equivalent or major award, full scholarship (ie tuition and stipend) or salary to undertake the proposed program
  • are currently enrolled in a degree in Australia
  • have already completed a research degree at the same level or at a higher level than the proposed candidature in the same program of study
  • provide false or misleading information to the University. Where there is reason to believe this condition has not been upheld, the University reserves the right to reassess the student’s entitlement to the award.

Award-holders may:

  • be in receipt of minor awards (eg a tuition-only or stipend-only scholarship), allowances or other earnings which are supplementary to an iRTP or iMQRES, or derived from part-time work undertaken within the guidelines set by the relevant scholarship conditions.
  • receive stipend top-up funding from industry or other sources to a maximum equivalent of 75 per cent of the basic Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate ($35,000 p.a. in 2024).
  • be in receipt of additional funds for field work, equipment and other such expenses not covered by the award.

Macquarie University ranks applicants on the basis of academic merit, relevant research output and experience and/or potential and the University’s Strategic Research Framework.

Components

The scholarship comprises:

  • a tuition fee offset, for up to three years
  • a living allowance stipend
  • the cost of a single OSHC policy with our preferred provider, Medibank ($2742)
  • contribution to airfares to or from Australia ($2500).

The value of the stipend scholarship is $35,000 per annum (full-time, fixed rate in 2024).
