Department of Geography and Planning

Discover new ways of thinking about people, places, and the planet.

Uniting the disciplines of human geography and urban planning, the department considers how social, environmental, cultural, economic and political elements interplay to shape the world around us. With this interdisciplinary approach, our academics and students seek to understand the relationship between people, place and culture.

Ranked in the top 100 geography departments in the world, our courses give you access to professionals with expertise in a range of fields. Their specialisations span across human rights to water planning, climate change to social housing and more. The Department of Geography and Planning courses span the breadth of these subjects, and in 2017, we’re commencing a new interdisciplinary undergraduate major in environmental humanities in affiliation with the Departments of Media, Music, Communications and Cultural Studies.

Backed by industry connections and support

Students are given the opportunity to build knowledge through interdisciplinary studies, engagement with guest speakers, practical experience, extensive network of industry connections, and internships through our PACE program (Professional and Community Engagement).

The department offers courses accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia, such as the Bachelor of Planning and Master of Environmental Planning.

Research projects

Our researchers work on research projects across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. These include major projects in urban systems,, Indigenous knowledge, global environmental change, vulnerability and risk in the Asia-Pacific region, and environmental justice. Our research has a major impact on policy and gives the public access to the very latest knowledge on some of the major environmental and developmental challenges we face.

Our research is strengthened by connections to social and environmental science disciplines across Macquarie and our international partners.
