Aboriginal Scholarship students hosted on campus for training

Sixteen Aboriginal health workers undertaking a Diploma in Audiometry have been welcomed to campus for their first face-to-face teaching block.

As part of the Improving Care Pathways for Otitis Media in Aboriginal Children project, 16 Aboriginal students were welcomed on campus for the first of several face-to-face training sessions as they work towards their Diploma of Audiometry. The students are from all over NSW, and are being trained to help meet the shortage of hearing healthcare personnel in many parts of NSW. It is hoped that once they have gained their Diploma, many may consider further studies or training, and will carry this knowledge back to their communities.

The project, led by Professor Catherine McMahon (Director of HEAR Centre), and supported by Walanga Muru, is funded by the Medical Research Futures Fund, and is part of the ongoing research programme into improving outcomes for Aboriginal children with chronic otitis media.
