Title: What do we know about speech sound disorders in bilingual children?

Abstract
Distinguishing between typical phonological development and speech sound disorder in bilingual children is difficult. In this presentation I will explore what is known about differential diagnosis for bilingual children with speech sound disorder. Differential diagnosis should be underpinned by an understanding of typical bilingual phonological development as well as a theoretical psycholinguistic speech-processing framework. Intervention studies of bilingual children with different types of speech sound disorders can also address clinically and theoretically significant questions. I will review the available treatment studies of bilingual children. Patterns of cross-language generalisation will be mapped to hypothesised deficits in the processing chain underlying the speech sound disorder.
