Memorialising a community
07. Paddington - Memorialising a community
A COMMUNITY STRICKEN
The stars on the map represent the homes of the families of the Paddington men who died in WWI. No section of the suburb was immune. It is hard to comprehend today the heartbreak that visited each of these households, and the impact it would have on such a tightknit community.
A WORKING CLASS COMMUNITY
The occupation profile of the men from Paddington who died in WWI provides an insight into the demographics of the suburb at the turn of the century. Paddington was a working class area, the terraced houses that are characteristic of Paddington today, offered cheap, high density housing for the labourers and tradesmen supporting a growing city.
