Biography

Dr. Colligan received her medical degrees from Harvard Medical School and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.  Throughout her clinical work in Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care, Dr. Colligan pursued academic work in human factors.  She obtained a Master’s degree in Risk Management/Patient Safety at University College London. Subsequently, she was funded by the National Library of Medicine as a human factors post-doc at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science (department of Systems Engineering.)

Her research interest is in complex healthcare systems, clinical work “in the wild,” and resilience.  Research has been funded by UVA Hospital System, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Boston, the American Medical Association, CRICO, AHRQ and the NHS.  Recent research projects utilized the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM, Hollnagel) and the Work Observation Method by Activity Timing (WOMBAT, Westbrook).
