Swimming for a cure

Crosby Radburn and Ben Hooper, the Blokes who Stroke swimming duo raised over $20K this year for the Macquarie University Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Research Centre.

Swimming for a cure

The Rottnest channel swim is no easy feat, but for Crosby the goal to honour his late Mum, a sufferer of MND, and contribute to finding a cure for MND was ample motivation.

Pairing with mate Ben, the Blokes who Stroke team completed the 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach, Perth to Rottnest Island, Western Australia.

The Rottnest swim is highly regarded worldwide as a physically demanding challenge with risks such as swimmers shoulders, hypothermia, dehydration and sea sickness. To prepare for the swim, the duo undertook months of intensive training featuring runs and swims all tracked and shared to their supporters who eagerly followed their strava results in the lead up to the big day.

Their hard work most definitely paid off – the Blokes who Stroke team completed the swim in 5 hours and 48 minutes. This time ranked them as 6th in their category, an incredible result. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, Crosby and Ben raised over $20,000 for the Macquarie University MND Research Centre. Their work will go toward funding clinical trials and research projects at the centre.
