| Description | Calling curious stargazers of all ages, Sydney’s most spectacular astronomy event is back on again, and you’re invited to pull up a front-row seat as we explore the Universe together. From small beginnings in 1988, our Astronomy Open Night has grown into what some regular visitors call ‘the Royal Easter Show for the Stars’ – and this year’s event will have more to entertain and educate and enthral you than ever before. Laugh – and gasp – at our beloved Physics Magic Shows, and observe the stunning sights of star formation in far-flung galaxies through our immersive Planetarium sessions. There will be lots of activities for kids of all ages. Is there Life on Mars? Find out more in our wonderful series of short talks from Macquarie academics and experts, ranging from a peek into the spectacular ‘hydrogen sky,’ to funny stories of space missions gone wrong, to the science of sci-fi (are wormholes even possible?). Macquarie University’s Astronomical Observatory will also be open, where you can observe the stars and planets in our Telescope Park. You won’t be able to miss the Laser Guide Star - a powerful tool used by astronomers to see the Universe more clearly, which will shine skywards from the central courtyard all night. And be sure to visit the Exhibition Hall, full of fun and exciting stalls from the local astronomical community, where you can chat about astronomy, science and much more! Food and drink is available to purchase, with many vendors from the University’s own food court open during the event. Astronomy Open Night will go ahead rain, hail or shine |
