The Centre for Environmental Law is thrilled to welcome Ms Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to virtually deliver CEL Annual Lecture in November 2021.

Originally from Tanzania, Elizabeth Mrema is a world biodiversity leader and lawyer. She was appointed as the CBD Executive Secretary by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on 8 June 2020. Before that, she worked as the Director of the Law Division and has worked with United Nations Environment Program for over two decades.

It is a CEL tradition that each year the Centre will have an eminent person in environmental law to give an annual lecture. Elizabeth’s lecture will not only showcase the CEL’s research strength in the field of biodiversity law and governance, but also consolidate the CEL’s status as a leading global law hub for biodiversity conversation.
