Macquarie Law School’s Annual Blackshield Lecture 2023 was delivered by Hon Justice Dr Brian Preston FRSN SC FAAL, Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales.
The lecture was delivered on “The right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment: its nature, content and realisation.”
In his lecture, Justice Preston comprehensively explored the substantive and procedural components of the ‘right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.’ He also suggested pathways for effectively realizing this right. Justice Preston placed a significant emphasis the future generations' right to a clean and healthy environment, and underscored the responsibility of states to safeguard this right. Furthermore, Justice Preston stressed that meaningful public participation in environmental decision-making, and access to environmental information are key to realizing the right to a clean and healthy environment.
