Eligibility for enrolment

Eligibility for enrolment

Citizenship and residency

To enrol as a Next Step student, an applicant must hold either Australian citizenship or have an Australian permanent residency status. Applicants who do not fall into either of these categories should contact Student Connect to discuss possible eligibility.

While students in some visa categories (e.g. provisional spouse visa) may be able to enrol, they will be limited to enrolment in no more than two units and will not be eligible to articulate to a bachelor degree while they still hold a temporary visa.

AND

Applicable criteria from one of the following categories:

Recent high school leavers (HSC in 2015 or 2016)

Recent high school leavers are students who completed their High School Certificate (HSC) or Year 12 equivalent in the last two years (that is, in 2015 or 2016).

A minimum ATAR of 50.00 is required for all applicants who are recent high school leavers to be eligible for the Next Step pathway. However, some degrees offered through the Next Step pathway have higher ATAR requirements. For example, the Bachelor of Science requires an ATAR of 60.00, and the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business Administration require an ATAR of 55.00.

Additionally, for articulation into some degrees via the Next Step pathway, students must undertake specific units nominated by the relevant faculty (academic department) to be eligible for articulation into that degree. (Please see 'Next Step Degrees and Entry Requirements').

Please note that bonus points are not considered for acceptance into the Next Step program, the ATAR without the bonus points are the minimum criteria for all application assessment purposes including choosing relevant units to study in the Next Step program.

Consideration for selecting unit choices may be given if an applicant can demonstrate strong performance in an area of study with supporting documentation. eg. Band 6 in the relevant subject choice completed in the HSC. Admission into the program, however, will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and restrictions may apply to the units available for study. Please contact Student Connect for further information.

Students with no HSC or equivalent

Students who did not complete the High School Certificate (HSC) or a NSW Year 12 equivalent, i.e. only completed their School Certificate (Year 10), and are under the age of 21 may not be eligible for the Next Step program.

Please contact Student Connect to discuss your eligibility for acceptance into the Next Step program.

Mature age students

ATAR requirements for the Next Step pathway do not apply to students who have completed the HSC or Year 12 equivalent more than 2 years ago, or who are over the age of 21.

However, please note that for articulation into some degrees via the Next Step pathway, students must undertake specific units nominated by the relevant faculty (academic department) to be eligible for articulation into that degree. (Please see 'Next Step Degrees and Entry Requirements').

Students who have not completed NSW Year 12 or equivalent will need to contact Student Connect to discuss their eligibility for acceptance into the Next Step program.

Students enrolled in other tertiary institutions who would like to study Next Step

Students who are currently enrolled at another tertiary level provider and would like to study via the Next Step pathway will be able to do so but you will need to complete the units mentioned in the Next Step handbook for articulating into the Bachelor degrees. You cannot apply for Recognition of Prior Learning until you are admitted into a Bachelor degree in Macquarie University.

Please contact Student Connect to discuss your eligibility for acceptance into the Next Step program.
