Computational models of human sentence comprehension and Generalized Left-Corner Parsing

Mark Johnson

When: Friday, 2nd August 1996

Time: 2:00pm

Where: Room E6A357, Macquarie University

Abstract:

This talk compares the Generalized Left-Corner family of parsing algorithms (which includes the well-known top-down and bottom-up parsing algorithms) with rather basic properties of human sentence comprehension concerning centre-embedding and (claimed) parsing preferences, presenting theoretical and preliminary corpus-based results. We end by sketching how finite-state approximations can be constructed for members of this class of parsing algorithms, and discuss statistical approximations that they induce.
