Employable Me 2 – graduate success stories

May 12, 2021

Graduating from university is an exciting milestone, and these days young grads are finding it challenging to secure a job in their chosen field. One of the many benefits of being a Macquarie graduate is our Career and Employment Service which offers non-academic, career-related advice, consultation and support services to all current students during their studies and up to 12 months after they graduate. CareerHub is an online jobs board that advertises jobs opportunities from employers who want to hire Macquarie students. Be sure to check it out and remember that the Careers team can assist you in preparing your application.

From law to banking, teaching to accounting, many of our young alumni are finding their Macquarie degree has been highly regarded in their industries.  Here we feature just some of them who have had recent employment success.

Madeleine Avico (BA/BCom 2017) - HR Specialist at Johnson & Johnson

My Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Human Resources combined with my Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Law and Global Governance helped me develop my communication skills and equipped me with the know-how to start my HR career.

During my time at Macquarie University, I was fortunate enough to experience an array of internship experiences, many through PACE. These experiences, combined with my studies, ultimately landed me my dream HR Graduate role at Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest broadly based healthcare company.

Benjamin Cant (BMarketing&Media 2019) – Strategy Analyst at Woolworths Group

I believe it was the human skills I developed through my years at Macquarie that helped me secure and now thrive in my job. I was fortunate to take part in multiple international exchanges, intern in a few industries and immerse myself in student groups. These experiences, in conjunction with my studies, were key to improving at problem solving, critical thinking and diligence. More importantly, they were formative for my interpersonal skills like empathy, communication and how to be a better leader.

Evelyn Hwang (MEnv 2019) – Resource Recovery Officer at Cleanaway

Studying Master of Environment in Macquarie University enabled me to follow my passion in sustainability and provided me a great exposure to what career options are available through a wide range of different areas of study offered in the course.

The MQ career support services with various couching sessions during my studies helped me develop the required skills for the recruitment process which allowed me to land my current job as a Resource Recovery Officer in a waste management company.

The thoughtful guidance and honest feedback from my lecturers and tutors also contributed to building my essential career skills such as research, presentation, stakeholder management and teamwork which I find very handy in my job.

John Georgaklis (BEng (Hons)/BComm 2020) – Mechanical Engineer at Stantec Australia

Through my experience as an Engineering and Commerce student alongside the opportunity to have served as President of Macquarie University Greek Association, the largest cultural society on campus, Macquarie University equipped me with the tools to be successful in my professional industry.

At Macquarie, I have been able to develop my technical knowledge, evolve my communication skills, and develop my ability to work as part of and lead a team to achieve a set goal. Having these skills awarded me the opportunity to work for a leading Engineering consultancy firm in Australia, Stantec Australia – the company that contributed to the building services for the new Arts Building at Macquarie University!

Fortunate Prosper (BComm-ProfAccg 2020) – Founder & Executive Director of TALANTAH, Tanzania

My degree from Macquarie, along with an alumni-funded entrepreneur scholarship to attend the NUS, equipped me with skills and knowledge to follow my dream to create opportunities for youths living in vulnerable environments in my community. After graduating, I returned to Tanzania and have established an education centre called TALANTAH.
