Arrow hits the literary target

the_seventiesCongratulations to historian Professor Michelle Arrow from the Faculty of Arts, whose book The Seventies has been shortlisted for the Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-fiction in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.

A social history of the decade that shaped modern Australia, The Seventies captures the emergence of the women’s and gay liberation movements amid the Royal Commission on Human Relationships, which brought people’s intimate lives into the public sphere.

The winners of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards are due to be announced on 27 April.

Geography educator and Macquarie PhD candidate Susan Caldis has been appointed an official STEM Ambassador for Science and Technology Australia, which will see her influencing public policy to improve geography education in Australia.

“Geography gives us a deeper understanding of the interaction between humans and the environment, and bridges the gap between sciences and social sciences,” Susan says. “These skills are vital for creating innovative solutions in areas like food security, alternative or clean energies, and mitigation of drought, fire and floods.”
