Postgraduate research

In Australia, students enrolled in PhD and MPhil degrees are often referred to as Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates.

Macquarie University offers HDR degrees in a wide range of research areas.

We also actively promote cotutelle and joint PhD enrolment. Through these programs, candidates are able to enrol and spend equal time at each university, submitting one thesis to two universities for joint recognition.

Research Training Pathway

In 2013, Macquarie University introduced a new postgraduate degree structure, making it the first Australian university to fully align with European, North American and Asian qualifications.

Consistent with the well-known 'Bologna model', the two-year full-time Master of Research (MRes) replaced most honours as the main pathway to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil).

Research at Macquarie University

Macquarie has a pervasive research culture which spans all academic levels, a vibrant postgraduate research program and an ongoing commitment to expand our Concentrations of Research Excellence.

Our researchers play a critical role in supporting social, cultural and economic advancement in Australia. We regard our higher degree research candidates as junior researchers and provide generous support to ensure they have the best possible experience during their candidature.

About one third of our PhD candidates are international. The majority of our international PhD candidates receive scholarships provided either by government scholarship agencies or our own Macquarie Research Excellent Scholarship (MQRES). We are also actively expanding our jointly supervised PhD (Cotutelle or Joint PhD) programs with other research intensive international universities to further enhance research collaboration with our international partner universities
