The Master of Research is designed for people who want to:

• develop advanced research skills and experience
• investigate a specific research topic in depth
• formalise research experience gained through previous study or professional practice
• prepare for a PhD or other doctoral research
• develop research capabilities for a career in academia, industry, government or other research-focused environments

What will you research?

In the Master of Research, you’ll develop expertise in a specific area of research interest while building the skills to undertake independent research.

• Duration: One year full time equivalent
• Research project: Investigate a research question in depth under expert supervision
• 20,000-word thesis: Communicate your findings through an extended research thesis

Fees and scholarships

MRes students may be eligible for scholarships that provide financial support during their one year of research, including a stipend valued at $40,900 per annum in 2027, indexed annually.

Scholarships may include one or more of the following:

• tuition fee offset
• living allowance (stipend)
• top-up living allowance (additional funding on top of a base stipend)
• fixed sum or one-off payment
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and/or visa application costs for international students.

MRes progressing to PhD scholarship

High-performing MRes students may also be eligible for a three-year scholarship to support progression to a PhD. Scholarships are awarded through a competitive ranking process.

The scholarship includes:

• a tuition fee offset
• a stipend valued at $40,900 per annum in 2027, indexed annually.
