Macquarie University’s School of Computing has been a powerhouse of world-changing research for more than 25 years, since our researchers pioneered the technology underpinning wi-fi. Today our research interests lie at the forefront of the digital technology revolution.
Our research themes
Our research is classified into five broad themes, under which there are research groups where various activities are carried out.
Our educational research and practice related to designing, developing and implementing pedagogy, curricula, programs and tools helps advancement at all levels in all types of educational settings. It concerns all aspects of computing education including AI-enabled education, ethics, online educational technologies, and learning technologies for teaching and learning computing.
Projects in this area strive for fundamental advances in security and cryptography, privacy, formal methods, quantum security, programming and software verification techniques. These improvements allow for trustworthy systems, services and support. Research outcomes are applied in networking, cloud computing, trusted computing, software systems, large-scale data, mobile and wireless, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Our research develops foundational theories and applied innovations to perceive, communicate, learn, behave, analyse, act, predict and decide in complex systems, data behaviours and environments. This involves applied statistics, symbolic, situated and generative AI, data science and analytics, machine and deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, optimisation, information theory and humanoid robots, with applications traversing biomedicine, health, finance, banking, telco, e-commerce, sustainability and government services.
Focusing on the interaction between human beings and computer technology, research in this field takes a human-centric approach. Using Macquarie University's leading-edge facilities (including the renowned Simulation Hub and a state-of-the-art Games Lab) researchers are exploring the design and development of pervasive interfaces, video games, motion tracking, training simulations, collaborative and immersive environments, and the overall evaluation of a game product.
Research in this area aims to design future network systems and improve the performance, robustness and ease of management of future communications. Teams conduct research in multiple areas of networking: autonomous systems, drones and UAVs, IoT, mobile and wireless networks, sensor networks, cloud and edge computing, network security and networked systems.
