Biography

Professor Rorden Wilkinson is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Registrar at Macquarie University. He leads the University’s academic mission, overseeing the quality and delivery of the Macquarie Advantage education strategy, academic standards, student experience, and the governance frameworks that support learning and teaching.

His portfolio includes leadership of key offices including the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Dean of Students), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), University Librarian and Art Gallery, and the Office of the Executive Director (DVCA). He works collaboratively with colleagues across the University to drive curriculum renewal, improve assessment practices, enhance student wellbeing, and promote an inclusive and effective learning environment.

Before joining Macquarie in 2022, Professor Wilkinson was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience) at UNSW Sydney, where he led the development and implementation of an institution-wide education and student experience strategy. Prior to that, he held senior roles at the University of Sussex, including Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Innovation) and Chair of the Department of International Relations, contributing to improvements in educational quality, research performance, and international partnerships.

Earlier in his career, Professor Wilkinson held leadership positions at the University of Manchester, including Head of International Politics and Research Director at the Brooks World Poverty Institute. He has also held visiting appointments at Brown University, Wellesley College, and the Australian National University.

His academic work focuses on international political economy, with particular attention to global governance, multilateral institutions, and least developed countries. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Arts and has advised organisations including the British Government, World Bank, World Economic Forum, European Parliament, and Commonwealth Secretariat.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

Responsibilities:
  • Engaging with external regulatory and statutory authorities involved in the teaching/learning mission of the University.
  • Interfacing closely with the Academic Senate and all offices of the University involved in oversight of enhancing academic quality.
  • Interfacing closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) who has carriage of the other core aspect of the University's academic focus.
  • Overseeing and planning the delivery of the University's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
  • Overseeing the development of a balanced academic staff profile for the University as well as the capabilities of the academy.
  • Developing and implementing strategies aimed at improving the quality of learning and teaching as well as capacity and capability.
  • Development and implementation of strategies aimed at increasing quality assurance in the delivery of teaching programs.
  • Development and implementation of strategies aimed at developing academic leadership capability and increasing academic staff engagement.
  • Review, implementation and management of academic policies, processes, structures, and resources aimed at ensuring excellence in teaching, learning and scholarship.
  • Initiating, building, and managing relationships and networks with key internal and external stakeholders and strategic academic partners.
