1. Read the Macquarie MD website

Read all information on this website to ensure you are aware of the dates and deadlines, the selection process and other important details including University, Macquarie MD program and NSW Health policies and compliance.

2. Read admissions guide

Read the Macquarie MD admission guide that applies to you:

• GEMSAS Medicine Admissions Guide 2024 on the GEMSAS webpage
• Macquarie MD International Admissions Guide 2025

These guides contain specific information on the selection criteria and minimum admissions requirements for the MD.

Domestic applicants are Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens. New Zealand permanent residents must apply as international applicants following recent legislative changes.

3. Before you apply checklist

Before applying for the Macquarie MD you need to:

• Complete a degree with a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0 or WAM of 65
• Sit the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and achieve a minimum overall score of 50 (with a minimum of 50 in each section). International applicants residing outside of Australia can sit the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and achieve a minimum total score of 500.
• Consider your preparedness and capacity to attend the compulsory international clinical placements.
• Meet English language requirements if required – overall IELTS score of 7 and 7 in each band
• Check that you are able to meet the Inherent Requirements and Program Requirements
• Check the Adjustment Factor Scheme and Indigenous Australian Pathway, if applicable.
• Ensure qualifications and medical test scores are current – qualifications considered for admission must have been completed within 10 years of intended enrolment.  GAMSAT scores submitted must be within four years of intended enrolment.

Entry is competitive. GPA and GAMSAT/MCAT scores of candidates selected for interview are likely to be significantly higher than the minimum entry requirements.

Please note that prerequisites in Human Anatomy and Human Physiology are no longer required for admission, however these are areas of assumed knowledge for commencing students.

4. Apply for the Macquarie MD

Submit your application online within the allotted timeframe. Important admissions dates are listed on the Key dates page.

• Domestic applicants – Please submit your application via Graduate Entry Medical Schools Admissions Centre (GEMSAS) and ensure that you have carefully read the GEMSAS Medicine Admissions Guide prior to submission.
• International applicants – Please submit your application directly to International Admissions at Macquarie University, ensuring you complete and upload the compulsory Supplementary Form as part of your online application. Carefully read the Macquarie MD International Admissions Guide 2025 before commencing your application.

5. Attend the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) (by invitation only)

Ranking and selection of applicants for interview is based on:

• 50 per cent GPA
• 50 per cent GAMSAT/MCAT

If selected, you will need to attend and perform a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). All domestic applicants residing in Australia must be available to attend an interview on Saturday 28 September 2024. In 2024 interviews will be conducted face-to-face.  International applicants must be available during June, August and October - interviews will be conducted in 3 rounds via Zoom or similar platform.

6. Wait for interview outcome 

Applicants will be ranked for an offer as outlined in the relevant Macquarie MD Admissions Guide.

7. Offers made

Ranking and selection of applicants for an offer is based on:

• 50 per cent GPA/WAM
• 50 per cent MMI

Successful applicants will be made offers, with some offers being conditional. Final results need to be checked and offer conditions met by applicants.

8. Meet compliance procedures

After accepting your offer, you need to meet compliance procedures before enrollment; for example inherent requirements, immunisation, criminal record check, working with children check, first aid certificate.

9. Accept or decline your offer

Offers need to be accepted or declined online as instructed (if applicable).

10. Receive welcome email

Successful applicants are sent the Macquarie MD welcome email with detailed information, including instructions for enrollment, NSW Health requirements and timetable information.
