Between co-chairing Macquarie’s Ally Network and coordinating equity outreach programs, Sophia Halpin keeps busy advocating for causes close to her heart.

Sophia grew up on the Mid-North Coast, near Seal Rocks, Worimi country, in regional NSW before moving to Eora land in Sydney to study Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney.

Sophia worked in International Student Mobility in Sydney before moving to London for two and a half years to work as an English language teacher for refugees and international students.

At the start of the pandemic, Sophia moved back to Sydney, beginning at Macquarie’s Widening Participation Unit (WPU). In the WPU, Sophia coordinates equity outreach programs with students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in higher education.

1. Something you feel proud of

My unit recently delivered one of our flagship programs, MQ inROADS, for the first time since COVID. This involved bringing 50 high school students from regional NSW to campus and giving them a taste of uni life. I’m proud to say it was a huge success.

I am also extremely proud to be one of the new Ally Network co-chairs. It is so fantastic to have a visible network to educate, support, and unite all Macquarie staff who identify as LGBTQ+ community members and/or their allies. We currently have over 600 members and look forward to growing that number.

2. Something you want staff to know about

When I was young and coming to terms with my queerness in a little country town, I literally didn’t know anyone like me or whether I would be accepted if I came out. Getting involved with the Ally Network is an opportunity for us all to show anyone in that position, not only are they not alone, but they are also recognised, supported, and celebrated.

3. A person you admire at Macquarie, and why

My manager, Jacinta Carruthers. She leads our unit with so much creativity, insight, humour, and untiring commitment to our team and the equity space. I’m constantly in awe of her and proud to be her friend and colleague.

4. What you need to do your best work

Plants on my desk, friendly colleagues to swap memes with and my Sapphic Songs playlist on Spotify.

5. A favourite photo from your camera roll

I travelled to Broken Hill recently for work to represent MQ at the Far West Careers Expo. It’s so gorgeous there.

6. The first person you go to for advice (and why)

Lotus Rana. Even though we’re no longer working in the same office, as she has just begun as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Consultant at Campus Life, Lotus is still my go-to person for work or personal advice. Her kindness and empathy, practical wisdom, people skills, and D&I experience mean that she always helps me work through my problems and see things with fresh eyes.

7. A website or app you can’t live without (and why)

Don’t judge me, but… the Aldi app. You never know what Special Buys they’re getting in next!

8. Where you live and what you like about living there

I grew up on Worimi Country, up north near Forster. I’ll always be thankful for having a childhood in such a richly beautiful place among the rainforests, beaches, lakes, and all the native flora and fauna that live there. Special shoutout to my favourite bird, the King Parrot!

9. I’m happiest when…

I’m at the beach with my friends in perfect conditions

10. What actions can staff (and students) take to make a difference?

Join the Ally Network and sign up for Ally training to broaden our MQ Ally community.

During Refugee Week we examine the issues affecting refugees and celebrate their contribution to our community.

During Refugee Week we examine the issues affecting refugees and celebrate their contribution to our community.

The theme this year is ‘Healing’ and Macquarie’s Widening Participation Unit (WPU) has organised a webinar panel discussion on Wednesday 22 June from 11.00am where a panel of students, academics, and community partners will discuss the transformative potential of education in the context of forced migration.

The WPU will also take part in a Community Expo Day organised by the City of Ryde where visitors can learn about education, employment, safety, health, and wellbeing to support refugees.

Macquarie supports students from refugee and asylum seeking (AS) backgrounds in a number of ways year-round, not just during Refugee Week which this year runs from 19 to 25 June. The programs below are all delivered by, or in collaboration with, the Widening Participation Unit and they are funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP).

“Education is the great equaliser – but only if there is equity in access to, and success in, education. The WPU’s initiatives demonstrate Macquarie’s commitment to diversity and recognise the importance of providing tailored support to ensure students from humanitarian backgrounds are both welcomed as part of the Macquarie community and supported to succeed,” says Associate Professor Taryn Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Programs and Pathways).

LEAP UP Macquarie Mentoring is a partnership with the NSW Department of Education that has been running since 2011. The mentoring program for students in years 9-11 from refugee and AS backgrounds pairs them with a volunteer Macquarie student, who works with them (in schools) over 11 weeks. This program has engaged 1238 school students from 18 South-Western and Western Sydney schools.

Refugee Transition Program assists students from refugee and AS backgrounds with their transition to tertiary education and empowers them to confidently navigate university life in Australia.

Asylum Seeker Fee Waiver Sponsorship supports undergraduate study for students who are holders of a temporary or bridging visa and are seeking asylum in Australia. It is designed to support people seeking asylum who are otherwise unable to access Commonwealth Supported Places or government loan schemes to support their study at university.

Making Connections Academic Mentoring links academic mentors with students from refugee backgrounds. The initiative was developed by the Academics for Refugees group at Macquarie University, in collaboration with the Widening Participation Unit and the Library’s Learning Skills Unit. Current students from refugee and AS backgrounds are paired with volunteer academics from within the same faculty. Mentoring also provides students opportunities to build their professional networks and seek guidance on post-university options.

“Being part of the team who set up Making Connections provided me with a concrete way to make a positive impact for students from refugee backgrounds. The students and mentors alike report that being part of Making Connections is a really positive experience,” says Professor Anina Rich, School of Psychological Sciences.

“It has been wonderful to connect with amazing colleagues across the University who care deeply and appreciate the opportunities for the mutual learning our program offers,” continues Anina.

The WPU also oversees two other academic programs, Waranara (students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds), and Creating Communities (rural, regional, and remote backgrounds).

If you are interested in finding out more about the Widening Participation Unit (WPU) or mentoring for any of their programs, please contact wpu@mq.edu.au

It’s that time again when charities are bombarding us with appeals to make a donation before the end of the financial year.

At Macquarie, the focus is on equity scholarships, which can make a huge difference to students. When someone has the ambition and tenacity to educate themselves, great things can happen for them, their family and their community.

Please support our students by donating to our equity scholarships fund.

“The only way that representation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities can increase in academia (currently 0.7% of staff at Macquarie) is by creating the opportunity for students to get into university,” says Cathy Rytmeister, a staff member who has chosen to donate to the equity scholarship fund.

The joy and pride felt by the scholarship recipients is palpable.

“Families all cry when you get a scholarship!” says scholarship recipient Mackenzie Dewsbury.

Here are some of our students talking about the massive positive impact that their scholarships have had on their lives:

Kyh is the first in his family to go to university, with the older kids in his hometown of Lightning Ridge providing inspiration as role models and the Equity Scholarship providing the means.

Widening Participation has given one student vital workplace experience, by engaging them for the redesign of its website.

“Working with the Widening Participation team has given me the confidence to interact with new workmates in a professional setting, which I’m sure will be really valuable in the future” – Jonah Skinner, 3rd year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) student

When the Widening Participation team embarked on their website redesign project earlier this year, they quickly realised that to deliver in the timelines they wanted to, they would need additional, skilled resources, and quickly.

Thinking ‘student first’ and in line with the current University-wide focus on employability, the team decided to offer a Macquarie student the opportunity to work on the project.

The team went through Student Life, which is part of EDSER, to utilise ‘Jobs on Campus’ an employment service managed by the Careers and Employment team that connects students with a range of job opportunities available on campus, to source the right person for the job.

“We knew we needed access to someone with the right skills and experience to be part of this project, and we were pretty sure we could find it out there in the student population,” explains Melissa Wong, Widening Participation’s Administrator. “It made sense for us to advertise this opportunity within our student community.”

Within a couple of days, the job was posted on the CareerHub website and applications started flowing in. After a shortlist and interview process the short-term project was offered to Jonah Skinner, a 3rd year student studying Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with a Specialisation in Software Engineering.

“We had a lot of great applications, however Jonah stood out because of his background and interests in software engineering, as well as some past work experience with the MQ web development team,” says Melissa. “He also seemed like a good fit for the team.”

Jonah quickly got stuck into the project and worked with the rest of the team to hit all major milestones. Overall, the project took close to three months to complete – a real achievement considering Jonah joined the team just as the pandemic madness hit.

“It was a whole team effort, however Jonah’s contribution has been really valuable – we were thrilled to have him as part of the team,” says Melissa.

A sentiment echoed by Jonah, who says the experience provided vital insights into working in a professional environment.

“My current goal is to become a web developer for a hot shot company, and working with the Widening Participation team has given me the confidence to interact with new workmates in a professional setting, which I’m sure will be really valuable in the future,” says Jonah.

“Through this project I’ve also realised the importance of stakeholder engagement in achieving successful delivery of a project, and also learned that you can really make a difference from day one of your role. These are great insights and not always the kind of thing that’s taught in the classroom.”

To see the completed project, take a look at the new Widening Participation website.

If you’re not familiar with the incredible work the Widening Participation Unit does for disadvantaged and underrepresented students, it’s time to make a cuppa, get comfortable and read on.

Who are you?
The Widening Participation Unit (WPU) was established in 2011, within the portfolio of the DVC (Academic) and presently sits under the PVC (Programs and Pathways).

WPU’s team of eight full-time staff, five casual student contractors and a number of PACE students, is headed by Interim Head, Dr Stuart Upton, who is also the Programs and Pathways Manager for PVC (PP).

WPU is made up of three teams which engage in initiatives aligned with the University’s Widening Participation Strategic Plan 2018 – 2022.

Outreach initiatives for Refugee and Asylum Seekers are headed by Saya Hussein, while the Regional and Remote outreach is headed by Margaret Meehan, supported by Lotus Rana and a number of casual student contractors. WPU’s Evaluation, Projects and Support teams include Joy Hou, Melissa Wong, Carolina Morison and Jindri De Silva and is also supported by a number of casual student contractors and PACE students.

What do you do?
WPU works to meet the University’s commitment to the national widening participation agenda, which seeks to enable and empower students who experience disadvantage or have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education, with access to participate. Widening participation initiatives are primarily funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP).

The WPU team designs and delivers research-informed initiatives that enhance disadvantaged and underrepresented students to access learning opportunities that encourage them to explore their potential.

Widening participation initiatives have mostly occurred in the pre-university, outreach space, but are increasingly engaging students through the life cycle of their higher education learning journey.

Over the years, WPU has developed strong networks of partners within, and external to, the University, who collectively form a growing community of equity-focused practitioners and academics.

WPU’s Outreach team focuses on delivering initiatives in partnership with schools across Greater Sydney and in regional areas of NSW, engaging students from refugee backgrounds as well as those from regional and remote areas. These initiatives are delivered via LEAP programs – Learning, Education, Aspiration and Participation.

WPU’s Evaluations, Projects and Support teams coordinate and enable non-LEAP widening participation initiatives to be delivered in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders, to generate advocacy and awareness. Managing relationships is key to their function as is their responsibility to provide financial, evaluation and reporting oversight for the University’s HEPPP allocation.

Why do you do it?
Education is a fundamental human right and the benefits of education are well known to radiate beyond the individual, creating positive impacts for the whole of society.

Enabling access for all students who have the capacity to participate in higher education, and particularly those who have faced structural disadvantages based on socio-economic status, is not only the right thing to do, but a necessity.

Any frequent misunderstandings or misconceptions about what your team does?
Many of the WPU’s initiatives delivered under the LEAP banner have become well known, sometimes more so than the team behind it, leading to confusion as to who the LEAP and WPU teams are! We are one and the same and much more when our networks of collaboration are considered.

At a macro level, the disadvantages and challenges faced by many students, particularly those who experience educational disadvantage due to financial and other impeding factors, are not as broadly known or as well discussed as they could be. While education offers the key to equality, there needs to be equity in education for that to be achieved.

This explains it succinctly:

What’s a recent achievement you’re proud of?
The LEAP UP Refugee Mentoring program, first established in 2011, was recently awarded the 2019 Australian Financial Review Higher Education Award in the category of Equity and Opportunity. We are pretty proud of this, as we are of the impact our initiatives have on students and their respective communities in regional and remote areas, and the growing network of partnerships and collaborations we have established.

Anything exciting on the horizon?
COVID-19 has changed everyone’s horizon, including how we engage with students and our partners to deliver widening participation initiatives that add value.

COVID-19 has also highlighted that now, more than at other times, disadvantages exacerbated by financial circumstances are likely to negatively compound on students’ outlook and participation. With this in mind, WPU’s work in the field and across our network, is as important as ever.

These are challenging times which bring opportunities to engage with our students and audiences in new ways. The WPU has focused on building a trove of online resources as well as participating in new collaborations with like-minded partners.

How can we engage with you?

The Widening Participation team

Many of us at Macquarie will remember 2020 for the extraordinary way we responded to the needs of students through a year of great change.

Every team at the University has gone above and beyond to support Macquarie students through the COVID-19 crisis, and the Widening Participation team has now extended this support to some of the state’s most vulnerable HSC students.

For the first time, the team is offering free access to the Macquarie HSC Study Lab program for a number of rural and regional partner schools throughout NSW.

The online Study Lab program was first created at Macquarie in 2015 to support Year 11 and 12 HSC students who needed extra help with their assessments, exam preparation, revision or simply understanding some of the more difficult concepts in their subjects.

Stuart Upton, Interim Manager in the Widening Participation Unit, says the University’s focus on supporting student success drove the decision to offer the free support in 2020.

“Understanding there were a number of HSC students who were feeling worried about the impact of COVID-19 on their HSC success was a major consideration in the decision to offer the HSC Study Lab courses for free,” says Stuart.

“Our partner schools were thrilled with the opportunity to offer this support to their students, particularly at such an uncertain time.”

Working closely with careers advisors in our regional and rural partner schools, the Widening Participation team offered HSC Study Lab courses in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Business Studies.

Almost 2000 students from the Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter, Broken Hill and Riverina regions benefitted from the course. Michelle Yip, Product Manager for HSC Study Labs, says they were able to get the offer up and running quickly.

“It’s been fantastic to be able to offer Study Labs for free to our partner schools who have supported us for many years, and especially to this particularly vulnerable group of HSC students who really need it,” explains Michelle.

“At a time when there was a rush to develop and upload material online, the fact that this resource was already established allowed us to quickly activate the offering, which was greatly appreciated by school staff and students.

Every month we celebrate some of the impressive achievements in the Macquarie community. Got something to share for next month? Tell us.

Macquarie’s seven Eureka Prize finalists

Congratulations to all of our finalists who had had outstanding success in their respective areas and who have been nominated in the Eureka Prizes. The Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of research and innovation, leadership, science engagement and school science.

Distinguished Professor Michelle Leishman and Distinguished Professor Lesley Hughes (main photo) with the Weed Futures team have been named as finalists for the 2019 NSW Environment, Energy and Science (DPIE) Eureka Prize for Environmental Research.

Associate Professor Joanne Jamie, Associate Professor Subramanyam Vemulpad and Dr Ian Jamie, have been nominated for the 2019 Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion, along with Yaegl Aboriginal Elder Dr Uncle Ronald Heron, and Dr Danny Bedgood and Associate Professor Paul Prenzler from Charles Sturt University.

Professor Neil Saintilan of Macquarie University’s Department of Environmental Sciences has been shortlisted for the Eureka Prize for a second year running. In 2019 he has been shortlisted in Environmental Science, while in 2018 his work was recognised in the Mentoring of Young Scientists category. His success as a mentor is obvious from his latest nomination, which builds on the success of his former students. Three members of the team completed their PhD studies and postdoctoral research under Neil’s supervision.

Macquarie University Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, Sophie Calabretto, is a finalist for the 2019 Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. In 2017 Sophie was chosen as one of the ABC’s ‘Top 5 Under 40’ researchers, which gave her a platform to engage with the wider community.

In addition to her Eureka Award nomination (above), Professor Lesley Hughes has also been honoured with the 2019 Australian Museum Research Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tess won a USD$3000 award from the Health and Behaviour International Collaboration (HBIC) to investigate drinking behaviour using psychophysiological measures. This project builds upon her PhD research, which investigates the impact of glass shape on drinking behaviours for soft drinks.

Tess explains the project greatly benefited from Macquarie University’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment (including a “bar laboratory”, situated in the MQ ‘Simulation Hub’, complete with a BIOPAC machine for measuring physiological responses).

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has received the Silver Pleiades Award from the Inclusion Diversity and Equity in Astronomy Chapter of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

The Pleiades Award recognises organisations in Australian astronomy that take active steps to advance the careers of women through focused programs and strive for sustained improvement in providing opportunities for women to achieve positions of seniority, influence and recognition.

In 2016 WiA broadened its aims to encompass wider issues of diversity. The overarching objective of the IDEA Chapter is to achieve an environment in all institutions associated with Australian astronomy that is welcoming and supportive of all academic staff, professional staff and students, regardless of gender and sexual identity, ethnic and cultural background, disability, age, family/carer responsibilities, political affiliation, and religious belief.

The Department received the Bronze award in this scheme in 2016.

On Thursday 20 June, Macquarie University’s Professor Sean Brawley, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Programs and Pathways) and the Widening Participation Unit invite you to celebrate Refugee Week at a very special High Tea fundraising event to support Macquarie University students from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

Macquarie is honoured to host the Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Edward Santow, who will give the keynote address. Mr Santow will be joined by speakers Archie Law, Chair, Sydney Peace Foundation and Humanitarian Director at Save the Children, along with Sofia Ihsan, a Social Science bachelor student who found refuge in Australia and support and acceptance at Macquarie University.

Environments of understanding make all the difference

An important topic of discussion at the event will be the impact of a welcoming society.

“A welcoming society for students from refugee and/or asylum seeker backgrounds is understanding, respectful and friendly,” explains Carolina Morison, Widening Participation Planning Officer. “Simply put, it’s the type of society anyone would wish to step in to. One in which opportunity is equal and respectful, and a place in which friends can be made and new understandings created,” Carolina said.

What’s on

The High Tea will feature a delicious selection of desserts made from the recipes of Macquarie University students and staff, including those from refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds. The Widening Participation Unit collected the recipes last year under The Sweetest Memory project and published them as a book of recipes and memories, which will be available for purchase at the event and online now.

All funds raised through product sales and tickets will go toward the Financial Needs Grant, which was established this year for Macquarie University students from refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds. The grant will assist in fostering meaningful and positive educational experiences for students and contribute to their success.

You can register for The Sweetest Memory High tea now. Tickets are $40 and the event takes place Thursday 20 June from 2:30pm to 4.30pm at the Art Gallery of NSW.
