Originally hailing from Mumbai, Aditya Sawant arrived in Sydney in 2016 to undertake a Master of Management degree at Macquarie. Like so many of our students, he fell in love with being part of the Macquarie community and has stayed on to give back to the University as an employee.

He is currently a Student Engagement Coordinator in the Macquarie University International College, where he helps other students get as much from Macquarie student life as he did.

1. Something you feel proud of
I’m proud to be part of a workplace where you are encouraged to grow and to maintain work-life balance. I’ve always take pride of being a part of the Macquarie community, both as a student and staff member.

2. Something people ask you when they find out what you do for living
“What do you teach?” – that was is a very common question I got in my initial days working at a university.

3. Something you’d like staff to know about
I’d encourage everyone to check out wellbeing facilities and activities available to our staff members. It’s so important to stay fit, not only physically, but also mentally.

4. What you need to do your best work
The motivation and energy I always get from my team. But, most important – I always need coffee to do my best work.

5. Your definition of success
I believe success and goals change with circumstances, so we all are achievers at our right time.

6. What you like about where you live
I’ve been living around the University since I arrived in Australia five years ago. I love going to Macquarie Centre and jogging around the campus – it’s been such a pleasure watching the University grow and change all these years.

7. I’m happiest when…
I’m trekking in the mountains with nature, enjoying what it gives us and thinking how we can save it!

8. A website or app you can’t live without
I can’t live without music – be it on Youtube or Spotify. It’s something which helps me in all aspects of life.

9. Something you’re trying to do differently in 2021
Living a healthy lifestyle and doing my part to protect the environment.

10. A personal quality you value in others
I seek humility from people around me. It’s a bit of an expensive ask these days.

Dr Can Yalcinkaya is a Program Manager at Macquarie University International College, managing Undergraduate Certificate and Diploma courses in Arts, IT and Engineering. He arrived in Australia from Turkey in 2007 to complete a PhD at Macquarie, and his strong passion for comic artistry and music feeds into his research work in a form that he calls “graphic scholarship”.

Can is the convenor of the Graphic Social Science Research Network, a founding member of the Comics Studies Society and a member of Macquarie University’s Centre for Media History. He’s also a member of the anti-racist Muslim metal band Hazeen, who have performed in venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Pretty interesting guy, huh?

1. Something you feel proud of
The work we do at MUIC-ELC to support our students in their transition to their bachelor degrees. We are a diverse, international, multi-disciplinary group of academics, teachers and professionals who create a special sort of alchemy in a fast-paced, intensive learning and teaching environment.

There’s a lot of innovation and exciting projects at MUIC, which makes it a great place to work.

2. The coolest bit of equipment you use at work
MUIC recently bought a 3D printer to use in our Engineering units. It sits next to my desk, and has been printing out various objects including a mini slug statue, wrenches, and models to be used in physics classes

3. A person you admire at Macquarie
My friend and MUIC colleague Dr Onur Ates, who I have known since we were PhD candidates in different departments. I admire his wit, resilience, loyalty to his friends, and his deep knowledge of everything from the life and times of Napoleon Bonaparte to the art of motorcycle maintenance.

4. What you need to do your best work
A sense of work-life balance. Coffee. And death metal.

5. How do you “draw” research?
I’ve been building a creative research practice since I finished my (traditional research) PhD thesis. One aspect of this is what I refer to as “graphic scholarship” or “comics-based research” – using the multi-modal medium of comics to communicate research outcomes.

While I continue to “write” my research, I have increasingly been drawing it, too (see Can’s analysis of Turkish film Homoti, which he calls “the gay ET remake”).

6. The first person you go to for advice
My partner – she’s one of the smartest people I know and knows me better than anyone else.

7. I’m happiest when…
I’m spending time with my partner in our backyard with our chooks and cat, or travelling or making art.

8. Something you’re trying to do differently in 2021
Change my art practice and learning to use digital tools, rather than the traditional pen and paper. I’m hoping this will help make me efficient once I get the hang of it.

9. Something you’ve read recently that has had an impact on you
Safdar Ahmed’s graphic novel, Still Alive: Notes from Australia’s Immigration Detention Centre. It’s an incisive and deeply personal critique of Australia’s immigration detention system and the stories told within it will stay with me for a long time. It is also a celebration of the healing powers of art and community. Highly recommended.

10. Something you’d like staff to know about
Dr Justine Lloyd and I have been co-curating a series of events on the themes of media, arts and activism, which will take place from 1 July to 20 August.

The main event is an exhibition titled “Panels that Transform: Comics and Activism” at the Macquarie University Art Gallery, featuring the works of three internationally renowned artists: Sam Wallman, Nicky Minus and Safdar Ahmed.

There will also be a mini zine fair, live comics readings, an online symposium, talks and workshops among other exciting events, so stay tuned!

In the lead up to the Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching awards, we are profiling all the Highly Commended Finalists.

This week, we take a look at the talented staff from Macquarie University International College (MUIC), Macquarie University’s English Language Centre (ELC) and the Library.

The 2020 Learning and Teaching Awards ceremony will be held virtually on Wednesday 2 December. Register now >>

Dr May Kocatepe
Student nominated award

Dr May Kocatepe is a teacher of academic literacies and a moderator of the Focus on Academic Honesty (FOAH) module. She is praised by her students for her useful workshops and positive guidance.

“My role as moderator of FOAH involved providing academic guidance to students who had been found guilty by the University Disciplinary Committee of academic misconduct. The personal and academic needs of these students were different to other student cohorts in MUIC,” she says.

“During zoom meetings, a number of these students appreciated my non-judgemental tone and described me as being “like a mentor and not a teacher”.

“I care about the learning and wellbeing of students and I view students not simply as ‘learners’ but as ‘participants’ in academic communities. I provide opportunities for students to participate in the social practices associated with academic communities and I encourage them to question their own (in)visibility within academic contexts and the implications of this. Such an approach promotes the idea that students are active and valuable participants in academic communities.”

Daniel Lombardo
Student nominated award

Daniel Lombardo is a valued teacher within MUIC’s department of Engineering and Information Technology who creates engaging classes and learning material for his students.

“Computer Science is a particularly difficult topic to create resources for and teach at an introductory level. In my opinion, there is this consistent perspective that computer science is a very difficult and boring field which hinders students’ ability to succeed,” he says.

“One of the great joys of teaching for me is destroying this perspective and building a new one where students realise that they are in control of the computer, they are the boss and they just need to tell it what to do. An approach that I use to foster this transformation of perspective starts with breaking problems into very simple pieces. This challenges the student’s perception as they realise that it is not actually difficult. Finally, I pose simple questions to help them identify how to combine the smaller pieces into the final solution.

“I believe that a strong rapport is critical. To establish a rapport with students I genuinely speak with them about their interests, share my interests and encourage everyone to get involved.”

Dr James Mackenzie
Student nominated award

When teaching Media Studies, Dr James Mackenzie places transformative learning at the centre of his teaching practice. He does this by introducing students to something they already know and allowing them to look at it in a completely different way.

“My lessons usually begin with the student’s own experience. Then once they have shared their ideas about a topic, I introduce the conceptual framework offered by Media Studies, so suddenly a new perspective is given on what they have already discussed,” says James.

“This is transformative for the students because they feel that after their lessons they can look at things that matter to them in a whole new way. This everyday strategy of fostering student engagement through transformation was also systematically included in the three units I designed for MUIC.”

“I will admit that when I first started teaching, I did feel the need to give the impression that I knew it all. But now when I don’t know something, I admit it to the students and we approach it as an opportunity to learn together. This sense that we are peers on a learning journey helps students feel respected and included as part of a mutually beneficial educational environment.”

Early career award

Rose Harvey is an Academic English teacher within Macquarie’s English Language Centre. She develops innovative lessons to improve language skills and prepare students for study at Macquarie, develop an understanding of Australian tertiary environments, facilitate interaction and promote self-confidence.

“My students enter my class shortly after arriving in Australia with a unique set of needs and with linguistic, cultural and educational diversity,” says Rose.

“In order to create a classroom environment in which students feel motivated to learn and safe to experiment, I treat my students as co-creators of knowledge. My approach draws on facets of constructivism, specifically the assumption that learners are not “empty vessels to be filled with knowledge” and in contrast are actively involved in the creation of meaning and the selection and pursuit of learning.

“My work designing and implementing innovative and transformative curricula has led to improvements in the ELC’s Direct Entry programmes, which articulate students into MUIC and Macquarie. The new courses better prepare students for tertiary study through content, activities and experiences which develop relevant skills and knowledge.”

Educational leader award

Trish Behan has been an integral member of Macquarie University English Language Centre since 2003. Over her career she has supported students and staff academically and in recent years, she has added a large focus on student mental health and wellbeing to her Senior Teacher role.

“To effectively address such issues in our institution, I engaged ELC and MQ PACE students as collaborative partners in developing initiatives unique to the ELC and Macquarie as well as showcasing these initiatives to key stakeholders in the ELC, Macquarie and the sector nationally,” she says.

“In 2018 I created a workshop to de-stigmatize mental health issues with international students and in 2019, I took this one step further, developing a mental health video called You are not Alone. This video is now used in MUIC-ELC orientation and workshops, Macquarie Business School and features in the MQ Wellbeing App.”

“It is great to see that my work in this area has not only impacted the ELC and Macquarie University but has reached the international student industry on a national level. Most importantly, student partners have developed a rich understanding of the ethical and culturally sensitive issues international students face daily in Australia.”

Learning innovation award

This talented team of engagement and advising staff is responsible for designing a series of activities and sessions that prepare students for their commencement at MUIC. This extended orientation is part of MUIC’s ME Week, a three-day event, and a crucial step in the student journey that provides students with advice about the College, their course, do’s and don’ts at university, and information about the support services available to them. Uniquely, ME Week aims to pre-empt issues that students might face socially or academically, with a focus on belonging and awareness of possible culture shock or impostor syndrome.

“We know that pathways students need extra support to achieve their goals, so we established a set of learning initiatives which focused on engaging, empowering, and evolving our students, consistent with the MUIC Teaching & Learning Philosophy,” says Inah.

“We listened to our students. We engaged internal and external stakeholders, including Student Wellbeing, RNA, MUIC/ELC Student Volunteers, MQ Sport, Careers and Employment, Delta Therapy Dogs, AUSISO, NSW Police and Allianz to deliver these workshops in safe, inclusive and innovative learning environments, away from the traditional classroom”

“During COVID-19, ME Week has been delivered online and in a blended mode. We know that ME Week is helping our students unlock their potential and enhancing their learning, by providing access to support services and an innovative learning environment.”

Learning innovation award

This team of teachers and librarians are responsible for creating The Macquarie Law School Legal Referencing Module (LRM). As members of Macquarie’s scholarly community, they are committed to enacting institutional values of honesty, respect, trust and responsibility. They seek to model these values to students by encouraging respectful engagement with the academic conversation.

“Understanding why, when and how to cite using the Australian Guide to Legal Citation style is a fundamental skill that allows law students to express ideas and present cogent arguments supported by appropriate evidence. Becoming proficient in the use of referencing reinforces the bedrock values of academic and professional integrity; however, time constraints make it difficult for referencing to be taught explicitly so we created a resource students could access any time on an as needs basis. It’s great for teaching staff too because we’ve created a block that sits within all iLearn Law units,” says Susan.

“The LRM innovates student learning by providing timely, self-paced instruction that enables students’ transition to the study of law at university. It develops their understanding of academic integrity and writing, underpins their academic learning while also equipping them with transferrable skills for lifelong learning and professional success.”

“This is particularly significant in the context of legal education, where students are required to demonstrate that they are fit and proper for admission to legal practice,” says Ilija.

Sessional staff award

Andrew Pentecost has been a respected team member of Macquarie’s English Language Centre for the last five years. He has a natural grasp for languages which has enabled him to develop into a teacher recognised for patience and clarity with international students.

“In my classes of international students I recognise a dynamic and diverse group of individuals with whom I am about to engage for an intensive period of study. I have developed the skill of creating a community of knowledge by learning all that I can about the students and helping them to learn about each other,” he says.

“I use humour and stories and I show my vulnerability so that they are not afraid to show their vulnerability through the learning process. I have found that this means they enjoy studying English despite having come to Macquarie for their major, not for English as such.”

His fellow teachers are quick to sing his praises with one saying “Andrew’s patience, professionalism and good humour in this stressful and challenging environment were truly commendable.”

Dr Pamela Humphreys, Jose Lara Herrera, Rebecca Wilkinson, Rose Harvey, Luke Thompson, Cecily van der Hout, Lesley Speer and Lesley Sender
Teaching excellence award

Director of MUIC and ELC, Dr Pamela Humphreys, led this talented team to deliver academic language and learning support to Macquarie degree students.

“There has been considerable scrutiny of the post-entry academic language and learning abilities of students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) in recent years. Language entry levels are set to be adequate for commencement but are not necessarily optimum for graduation as these skills are critical to our students’ academic success and future employability,” says Pamela. “It is therefore incumbent on us to make this everybody’s business, distributed according to our role.”

“The ELC is the University’s English language provider. While its core business for over 30 years has been pre-sessional English language courses, it has also delivered academic language and learning support to Macquarie degree students since 2004, offered on demand and at the request of faculty.

“Over this period, targeted, timely and effective interventions have been provided by our experienced team. We have delivered integrated and embedded academic language and learning support to target issues, transform learning resources, and enhance student outcomes. This has been achieved through a mix of archetypal mechanisms such as diagnostic testing, targeted workshops, co-teaching, embedding, drop-in consultations and the co-marking of assignments with discipline academics.

“In addition to supporting students as the primary stakeholder, this work also encourages and enables academic staff development to better address the needs of EAL cohorts.”

Main image: Dr Tayyaba Zafar is our latest NSW Young Tall Poppy winner.

Every month we celebrate impressive achievements and partnerships within the Macquarie community. Got something to share for next month? Tell us.

Macquarie’s star scientist

Congratulations to Dr Tayyaba Zafar, who has been named among the 2020 NSW Young Tall Poppies by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science.

Tayyaba is an astrophysicist and lecturer at Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO) at Macquarie University, with her work focused on what stardust can tell us about the universe.

A strong advocate for encouraging women into STEM, read about Tayabba’s work inspiring the next generation of female scientists.

One overall winner in each state will be announced at the national Tall Poppy Awards later this month.

Historian’s ‘master work’ wins Premier’s prize

Kate Fullagar, an Honorary Professor in the Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations, has won the General History Prize at the 2020 NSW Premier’s History Awards for her book The Warrior, the Voyager, and the Artist.

By charting the unlikely story of the intersecting lives of three 18th-century figures – Cherokee warrior Ostenaco, Raiatean voyager Mai and the British artist who painted them both, Joshua Reynolds – the book challenges our understanding of Indigenous peoples’ interactions with the globalising force of the British Empire.

Yay for our BA

Macquarie’s reimagined Bachelor of Arts – launched this year – has been shortlisted in the Australian Financial Review’s Higher Education Awards in the Employability category.

Designed in consultation with industry partners, the Faculty of Arts created the new degree to equip students with the most in-demand transferable skills like communication, problem solving and critical thinking to prepare them for employment. Throughout the course, students build a digital portfolio to showcase their skills to future employers while learning how humanities subjects can be applied to tackle problems in the world of work.

The AFR Higher Education Award winners will be announced on 18 November.

New grant to support wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people

A team from the Department of Indigenous Studies, made up of Professor Bronwyn Carlson, Madi Day, Dr Tristan Kennedy and Dr Ryan Frazer, has been awarded a $950,000 grant by the Commonwealth Department of Health for a project in partnership with ReachOut Australia.

The project aims to address the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people through an innovative and culturally safe social media campaign and supporting online resources.

Centre for Emotional Health research project awarded $700,000

Bupa Health Foundation has committed approximately $700,000 to a research project aimed at developing a sustainable system to deliver early intervention for mental health through Australian schools.

Working with students, parents, educators and policy-makers, ARC Australian Laureate Fellow and Distinguished Professor Ron Rapee will lead the project with the aim to develop and test the best possible method to identify youth at risk and test effective pathways to appropriate care.

“Young people with mental health problems rarely reach out for the help that they need. With this support from the Bupa Foundation, we’ll be able to develop innovative methods to identify young people who are in distress and connect them with the most appropriate places to get help,” says Ron.

Macquarie’s course #1 in Australia

In April, Austrade partnered with the social learning platform FutureLearn and Universities across Australia to provide free online courses to help students around the world continue learning during COVID lockdowns and to promote Australia as a quality study destination.

Twenty Higher Education and English Language Training providers released a collection of 52 free short courses onto the FutureLearn site. With over 836,000 enrolments, the campaign has been well received globally.

MUIC-ELC’s ‘Improve your IELTS Speaking Score’ has rated the most popular among these offerings, with 75,000 enrolments, in excess of 35,000 active participants, 7,300 completions and a rating of 4.9 out of 5 for satisfaction.

Director of MUIC and ELC Dr Pamela Humphreys led development and content planning for the course. She says it’s immensely gratifying to see how the course has resonated with international students,.

“We’re so proud that it was number one in the Austrade campaign based on enrolments. The team did an exceptional job putting it together, and it really is a wonderful testament to the quality of teaching we provide at MUIC-ELC.”

Driving student success: MUIC and ELC’s senior L&T leadership team (L-R) Dr Pamela Humphreys (Director), Dr Cinitia Agosti (Associate Director of Learning and Teaching, MUIC) and Cara Dinneen (incoming Associate Director of Learning and Teaching, ELC)

There’s a new L&T leadership team at Macquarie University International College (MUIC) and English Language Centre (ELC) – three women who share a passion for transforming lives through education.

Director of MUIC and ELC, Dr Pamela Humphreys, and Associate Director of Learning and Teaching at MUIC, Dr Cinitia Agosti, who have both been in place since mid-year, will soon be joined by Cara Dinneen, who will commence as Associate Director of Learning and Teaching at ELC next month.

“With Cara’s appointment, we have an excellent L&T leadership team at MUIC and ELC,” notes Pamela, who was a finalist in this year’s Academic Staff Awards in the Educational Leadership category. “Both Cintia and Cara are super experienced and capable, so we are well-positioned for the future. I think 2020 is going to be a great year.”

We sat down with the three to find out more about how they’ll be working together to drive student success.

Tell us a bit about yourselves, and what drew you to the education field…

Pamela: “I’ve worked in international education for 30 years in the UK, Spain, Italy, Singapore and Australia. At age 22, I was planning to travel the world and avoid a career, but the career eventually caught up with me in Singapore where I was lucky to have considerable professional development opportunities with the British Council before coming to Australia.

“I’m proud to have received Senior Fellowship of both Advance HE and IEAA, and I’m passionate about supporting the academic language and learning needs of students, and empowering teachers to transform students’ lives.”

Cintia: “My involvement in the higher education sector now spans more than three decades, but I have been passionate about education from a very early age – as a six-year-old in Argentina I would teach my teddy bears in my room, blackboard and all.

“Teaching, curriculum development, research, training and publishing have never felt like ‘work’ to me. I’m devoted to building a positive, collegial culture that draws on every team member’s strengths and supports professional development.”

Cara: “I have 18 years’ experience in teaching and educational leadership in Spain, Oman and Australia. It all began when I went to Spain for a short stint teaching English and learning a little Spanish. I picked up a theory book on Applied Linguistics and was absolutely hooked. Six years later I came back from Spain with a fluent level of Spanish, a husband, and a fresh sense of purpose!

“Now, I’m passionate about collaborative innovation – mapping people’s expertise and ideas to theoretical frameworks to create quality, long-lasting solutions in emergent areas of need. I’m also currently completing a Master of Professional of Practice in Digital Learning Leadership.”

What are you looking forward to for MUIC and ELC in 2020?

Pamela: “We’ve done a lot of great L&T work at MUIC over the last 18 months, developing a Learning and Teaching philosophy and associated strategy, followed by a Teaching Excellence Framework. The MUIC academic team have also been involved in a curriculum overhaul to better meet the needs of AQF5 students who are predominantly English as an Additional Language (EAL).

“I’m also delighted that the ELC has again been able to provide post-entry academic language and learning support to over 1700 students in Session 2 this year, with great feedback from both academics and students.

“In 2020, completing the MUIC curriculum project and revamping our flagship Direct Entry Program at ELC will be our priorities. I also look forward to continuing to support students during their degrees and delivering on the recent recommendations of the English Language Working Group, which I was fortunate to chair. The ELC is leading the sector in international student wellbeing and I am sure that this will receive deserved attention.”

Cintia: “I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Pamela and the Senior Academic Team in all the L&T projects we’ve undertaken at MUIC this year, including our recent overhaul of assessment tasks for MUIC’s suite of offerings, which I completed with MUIC’s Program Managers, Dr Can Yalcinkaya and Dr Onur Ates.

“Stepping up to the role of Associate Director Learning and Teaching has given me the opportunity to represent MUIC at different forums and collaborate in the Learning and Teaching initiatives being discussed at a University-wide level. I am impressed by the level of commitment that my University colleagues show in driving improvements in this area.

“We’ve identified areas of possible growth for MUIC in the online education space and I’m excited at the prospect of expanding the scope of the College’s course offerings to meet the varied needs of both local and international students.”

Cara: “I am incredibly excited about joining the ELC in December and finding out about the learning and teaching programs and culture. Throughout 2020, I look forward to engaging in action research with interested staff and to furthering my own investigations into the use of digital translation and paraphrasing tools. I hope to engage regularly with students and teachers at Macquarie in a meaningful discussion about an area of practice that we simply need to be talking more about.”

In the lead up to the Academic Staff Awards, we will be profiling the amazing achievements of all of the finalists over the coming weeks.

This week, we take a look at the staff from MUIC and the Library.

Don’t forget to register for the Awards Ceremony as places are filling up fast.

Learning and Teaching

Mr Daniel Lombardo
Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Student Nominated Award

Mr Lombardo explains the biggest challenges he has faced in his career stem from the range of language capabilities of the students, and in making the course content exciting by relating it to everyday life.

“I have overcome these challenges by developing teaching material with several levels of embedded language support, implementing innovative assessment strategies and taking a flipped classroom approach,” he says.

Daniel initiates discussions throughout the classroom regarding the everyday applications of particular concepts taught in class and notes that these discussions are typically initiated at the start of a new topic to excite and engage the students, enhancing their learning of the corresponding content.

“The discussions are also useful as they encourage engagement between international and domestic students, forging friendships and creating an overall comfortable learning environment.”

Daniel also takes a flipped classroom approach. “There are many different techniques I use to engage students and enhance their learning. In general, these techniques are focused around encouraging students to analyse different interpretations of problems, identify the differences between them and understand which interpretation is correct.”

Mr Aleksandar Stefanovic
Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Student Nominated Award

Mr Stefanovic explains international students face a number of challenges with regards to acculturation such as culture shock and difficulties with language. Alek has employed numerous strategies to guide students through this difficult initial period.

“An important element is to understand the motivators each student has,” he says. “Motivation is commonly regarded as one of the key factors in successful second language acquisition and it can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. The teacher, and the effectiveness of their communicative style, can be an important aspect in motivating students. Through clear communication, I attempt to ascertain the important intrinsic and extrinsic motivators each individual student has and motivate them accordingly.”

Dr Robyn Westcott
Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Learning Innovation

In 2016, Dr Westcott led a project team in the Learning Skills Unit (LSU) that secured an internal Innovation and Scholarship Program Grant to design and pilot a student-led writing support program: WriteWISE.

“The WriteWISE program was conceived in response to two key concerns,” Robyn explains. “The first was research into the first-year experience, which showed a sizable minority of all students – 38 per cent – find academic standards at university much higher than expected.

“The second was an unmet demand for formative writing feedback amongst Macquarie’s undergraduate students.”

WriteWISE innovates the North American ‘Writing Centre’ tradition – in which academically successful students are recruited and trained to provide writing instruction to their peers – to the Macquarie context by linking personalised writing support to the completion of assignments in nominated 100-level partner units. The program also assists upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students via a ‘drop-in’ service at the Library Info Desk.

“WriteWISE provides a constructive, community-focused environment in which peer-directed conversations that build students’ confidence as academic writers can flourish. The program’s ongoing success affirms our belief that peer-led learning initiatives empower students and peer leaders alike.”

The Foundation and Diploma Direct Entry Program Team lead by Ms Alejandra Vazquez
Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Learning Innovation

In 2017, the English Language Centre (ELC) decided to re-develop its 10-week Foundation Direct Entry (FDE) and Diploma Direct Entry (DDE) curricula.

“As students studying these programs are diverse in their academic and socio-emotional needs and behaviours, the ELC took an innovative approach that enabled the creation of curricula that were outcome-specific as well as aimed at increasing overall student learning, engagement and experience,” says team leader Alejandra. “Emphasis was heavily placed on technology-enhanced environments, task-based learning (TBL) activities or projects, and combined class activities and excursions.”

Alejandra explains the FDE and DDE courses were developed collaboratively by a team comprising senior teachers, management and selected teachers.

“The design was underpinned by the ELC’s established pedagogical framework, adhering to well-researched pedagogical principles of learning as an active process, with the classroom as a community where students learn by collaborating and sharing, and engage in communication that is meaningful and relevant to their lives. The design also embraced principled eclecticism, where tasks drive learning and determine assessment, yet where focus is placed on both meaning and form, and on both implicit and explicit learning.”

Dr Pamela Humphreys
Vice-Chancellor’s Educational Leader Award

Macquarie University International College (MUIC) Foundation and Diploma students require intentional linguistic and/or academic support via transition pedagogies in order to succeed.

Dr Humphreys explains that in the intensive model delivery (IMD) used at MUIC with six, seven-week terms per year, a different approach to curriculum/assessment design and delivery is required.

“This context posed two challenges from a learning and teaching perspective,” she says. “The need for high quality, scaffolded, standardised curricula, designed at the program level to meet the needs of pathway students; and the upskilling of teaching staff to deliver it.

“I therefore made the business and pedagogical case to engage an Academic Language and Learning (ALL) team and Learning Designers for a curriculum overhaul. I gained approval from the DVCA and Associate Deans Teaching and Learning and Quality and Standards to adapt units for our context, and agreed to share any resulting resources with faculty.

“Teaching staff have received indirect professional development (PD) in curriculum and assessment design during this project, plus direct PD from visiting speakers and a festival of learning and teaching.”

Pamela notes that this work has been underpinned by a learning and teaching philosophy and led to a Teaching Excellence Framework.

Celebrate with your colleagues

As part of Macquarie’s commitment to keeping pace with changing student needs and teaching methods, Property, faculties and offices are constantly collaborating to deliver spaces that inspire transformative learning and support student success. Here we take a look at one of the latest projects to be completed.

Reinvigorated teaching, study/breakout and outdoor courtyard areas were recently unveiled at 8 Sir Christopher Ondaatje Avenue, the home of Macquarie University International College (MUIC) and the English Language Centre (ELC). Hundreds of students occupy these buildings each term and the spaces are in use almost year round.

Dr Pamela Humphreys, Interim Director, Macquarie University International College and Director, English Language Centre, said the brief was to create a friendly place for international and local students to study, socialise, connect as well as unwind in modern spaces that are conducive to learning .

“We asked for furniture, paint colours and design features that reflect our vibrant and engaging approach while at the same time made sure access to power outlets and quiet spaces was readily available,” says Dr Humphreys. “We are delighted by the design and our students clearly agree. The new spaces have been very well-patronised since we re-opened.”

The teaching spaces are equipped with operable wall panels and state-of-the-art audio-visual technology. The Independent Learning Centre (pictured) offers opportunities for independent study, individual academic language and learning advice and workshops. The addition of a Computer-Delivered (CD) IELTS Test Centre brings Macquarie right up to date with the latest English language proficiency testing.

Macquarie University International College and English Language Centre staff and guests will be joined by Professor David Wilkinson, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Engagement), at the offical building reopening on 23 May.

We sit down with the new Deputy Director of MUIC/Head of ELC and the Director of MUIC to learn more about their career and visions for the future.

The new Director of Macquarie University International College (MUIC), Ruby Biscuit, has extensive experience in international education in the areas of English language education for overseas students, high school and academic preparation for overseas students, and Early Childhood Education vocational training.

She is joined by the new Deputy Director MUIC / Director of English Language Centre (ELC), Dr Pamela Humphreys. Pamela has held a number of senior positions in international education and has recently completed her PhD on English language proficiency in higher education, for which she received the IEAA Excellence Award for the Outstanding Postgraduate Thesis category.

We sat down with Ruby and Pamela to learn more about their career and visions for the future of MUIC and ELC.

What has been your greatest career accomplishment to date?

Ruby: I was holding a leadership role in an English Language and High School Preparation College during a period of significant change. The most rewarding aspect of this period for me was contributing to the shift in how individuals in the organisation saw themselves and each other, in turn redefining what they perceived the organisation as capable of achieving.

Pamela: I am very proud of the work that I and my teams were able to achieve in the post-entry academic language and learning space, and the recognition of that work via several high profile national awards.

What is your vision for the future of MUIC and/or ELC?

Ruby: Macquarie University has long been perceived as having the courage to do things differently, and I see the MUIC/ELC future continuing on this trajectory. These two high-performing organisations coming together has the potential to re-frame pathway entry and produce quality tertiary outcomes.

Pamela: My vision for MUIC and the ELC is to continue to build on the current quality so as to provide outstanding pathway programs for our students.

What has been a significant work challenge for you, and how have you overcome it?

Ruby: I am a big-picture strategic thinker, and during my career I have had to learn how to communicate in a way that is tangible enough to be clearly understood, while maintaining enough space for the team to take ideas to new and improved versions. I I get a lot of satisfaction working with my colleagues improving ideas beyond what I can imagine alone.

Pamela: One work challenge was to manage a number of teams and projects at the same time. I overcame that challenge by ensuring capable people were in place to operationalise each project with me. The team around you is the key to success.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

Ruby: I make sure that when I am not working, I take my mind away fully. I make an effort to not discuss work issues at home, and if I need support with work-related issues, I use my peer and supervisory support network. I exercise regularly, eat well and maintain personal projects unrelated to my day job. This approach allows problems to sort themselves out in my subconscious while I work on ensuring I’ve got other interesting things to talk about with friends and family.

Pamela: In the last few years, my work/life balance has been achieved by ensuring I kept up with my musical and theatrical interests. I have played piano in a big band for many years and last year I performed in the musical “Wicked”. There’s nothing quite like performing on stage to a packed house!
