The Movies at Macquarie series will launch Thursday 23 April with a screening of The Dish, a film celebrating the space era and the exciting role Australia played in bringing the first Moon landing to audiences around the world.

Following the film, Dr Lee Spitler from the Department of Physics and Astronomy will lead an insightful panel discussion, featuring astronomers and other experts who use the Parkes telescope. The panel will focus on the future-shaping priority of Secure Planet.

“Aside from learning more about the Apollo 11 moon landing, movie-goers will learn more about how Parkes has played an important role in Australian astronomy research,” he said.

Dr Spitler, who uses some of the largest telescopes in the world to study extremely distant galaxies, explains that Macquarie astronomers are currently working with researchers from CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science.

“I’m starting an exciting collaboration with astronomers who regularly use ‘The Dish’ to take radio pictures of the fuel that is needed to produce new stars,” said Dr Spitler. “Galaxies are hosts to all the really important things in our Universe: stars, planets, solar systems and life.”
