Google scholars shine

Join us in congratulating Sarah Heimlich, a second year Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Arts student who has been announced as an Asia Pacific recipient of the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship.

It’s a great honour for 20-year-old Heimlich, who has been steadily building a reputation as an emerging science leader.

“When I was selected, I was excited to be able to spend time hanging out with other geeks. It didn’t really dawn on me until I arrived that everyone there would also be female. There I was amongst all these other girls who were just as passionate about what I did.

“For probably the first time in my life, it felt completely ok to be ‘one of the girls’.”

Our Big Data future

Industry executives and University staff gathered at Google Australia in Pyrmont last week for a Macquarie University Thought Leadership event, ‘The Future Driven by Big Data’.

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) Professor Sherman Young opened the session.

“As data gathering and analysis technologies become ubiquitous, we need to remember that there is a human story behind every data point. And as useful as we think the data is, only by understanding the full story does it become truly valuable,” he said.

Faculty of Business and Economics Associate (Dean Research) Professor Paul Gollan was Master of Ceremonies, and featured speakers Adam Driussi (Macquarie alumnus and founder of Quantium), Dr Neil Fraser (Macquarie’s Director of Strategic Planning) and Google Australia’s Head of Sales Engineering Angelo Joseph discussed how Big Data could contribute to ground breaking research and foster innovation, and the need for Australian business to apply multidisciplinary skill sets to harness the benefits.

Economic thought leadership
At the next Thought Leadership event on 9 December Sir Roderick Eddington AO, Chairman of J.P.Morgan and Lion (Australia and New Zealand) will discuss Australia’s role in regional and global economies and his observations of the G20 Summit.
