Firsthand perspectives from industry thought leaders

Financial Risk Day is an annual event where leading figures from academia, industry and regulators discuss the achievements, trends and concerns in the development of the latest ideas underpinning financial market innovations.

Since 2010, the conference has featured panel discussions and showcase sessions hosted by industry experts from across Australia and the world.

Financial Risk Day 2025: Digital Finance

As the world embraces digital currencies and experiments with tokenised financial assets, the Macquarie University Emerging Risks Research Centre will host its 14th annual Financial Risk Day on 24 October 2025. We'll discuss the risks and opportunities in the rapidly evolving world of digital finance.

The conference will be co-hosted by Macquarie University FinTech and Banking Research Center and is an exciting opportunity to hear firsthand opinions from leading academics, practitioners and regulators about opportunities and potential problems in digital finance.

This year, Financial Risk Day will be focusing on the latest advancements in digital finance. It is an exciting opportunity and concern at the same time. Everyone would like to understand how the solutions will evolve and what regulatory response would be appropriate to prevent backlash and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Leonie Tickle, Professor of Actuarial Studies and Executive Dean of Macquarie Business School, will present a welcome address at the opening. The conference will feature:

  • panel discussions moderated by David Orsmond (Professor of Economics at Macquarie Business School and former Deputy Head of Financial Stability Department at the RBA)
  • a Macquarie University project showcase session
  • a strong line-up of outstanding speakers from industry, academia and regulators.

The topic for the 2023 Financial Risk Day was Energy Transition: Risks and Opportunities. Our speakers examined risks, opportunities and solutions for the transition of energy markets and the de-carbonisation of the economy.

Experts from industry, regulation and academia discussed existing and new ideas on how to facilitate a smooth transition, the impacts of the transition on energy markets, financial institutions, and the economy as a whole.
