Full title: Student housing in Australia: policy, markets and urban change

In the context of the current housing affordability crisis, universities – and especially their international students – have been identified in public and policy debates as having major housing market impacts by increasing housing demand and rents. However, the scale of the housing market impacts of international students has been challenged by universities and private sector providers.

About the scholarship

By mapping funding, development and management activity at a national level and undertaking case studies, the project aims to generate theoretical and applied knowledge about the objectives of university and private providers, as well as the opportunities and challenges for future supply. The PhD project should align with this broad aim.

Potential PhD projects include, but are not limited to:

  • media and policy representations of university students and their housing market impacts
  • planning frameworks for delivering affordable student housing
  • finance and development models for student housing provision (university, private, partnership models)
  • emergence of student housing as an investment asset class
  • the role of tertiary education policy in driving student housing
  • impacts of student housing on local housing markets
  • conflict and opposition to student housing development
  • student experiences of student housing.
