Project 89
The Project 89 scholarship is a co-funded scholarship designed to support high-achieving Vietnamese students wishing to undertake graduate research at Macquarie University.
If you are an international student from Vietnam applying for a PhD or MRes at Macquarie University, you may be eligible for this Macquarie University and Vietnamese Government co-funded scholarship.

Funded jointly by Macquarie University and the Vietnamese Government (Ministry of Education and Training), this scholarship aims to develop future research leaders by providing advanced training in a world-class research environment.
Successful applicants will undertake either a Master of Research (MRes) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at Macquarie University, working closely with leading academic supervisors in their field.
This scholarship offers an exceptional opportunity for talented Vietnamese students to:

Availability
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:
- be a citizen of Vietnam at the time of your application
- intend to reside in Sydney, Australia during your candidature
- meet the admission criteria for commencement into the Master of Research (MRes) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Download additional entry requirements.
- at the time of application meet the English language requirement for Macquarie research degrees. Download English language rquirements.
- satisfy all the criteria for admission to Macquarie University
- have a valid visa enabling the commencement and completion of study in Sydney, Australia
- secure the required approvals through the Vietnamese Government’s Project 89 nomination process
- satisfy all other eligibility criteria as defined by the Vietnamese Government, Ministry of Education and Training, International Cooperation Department.
If an applicant has a conditional offer of enrolment at Macquarie University contingent on receiving the Vietnamese Government’s award, and the Vietnamese Government’s award is not granted, they may still enrol at Macquarie but will be responsible for all costs, including tuition and living expenses.
Components
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, and additional benefits such as return international airfare and travel allowances, in accordance with Project 89 arrangements.
Successful applicants will receive:
- from the Vietnamese government:
- tuition fee support of up to $25,000 USD per academic year paid to the University
- a monthly stipend of $1120 USD paid directly to each student by the Vietnamese Government
- an international return airfare and travel allowances
- overseas student health cover (OSHC) for the time spent in Australia (up to $1000 USD per year).
- from Macquarie:
- a tuition scholarship to supplement the Project 89 funding ensuring there is a full tuition fee scholarship for the standard duration of the applicable program
- a supplementary (top-up) living allowance up to the Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) stipend rate to support students whilst in Australia.
