A major aspect of this project is its development of MANTO, a digital model of Greek myth. Successful candidates will contribute to MANTO and use its data as the basis of their own analytical projects.
MANTO offers researchers highly structured data suited to network analysis, mapping and other quantitative approaches. Its particular strengths lie in its:
- attention to place-based storytelling
- integration of different kinds of ancient source materials within the same dataset.
Candidates should propose their own topic within the research area of the project. Suitable projects might focus on:
- crisis and continuity in the storytelling of particular regions in antiquity, at single complex sites or during particular time periods
- developing interpretative models for understanding localised storytelling across different source material (eg visual or material culture, epigraphy, papyri, literary genres)
- exploring the potential deployment of network analysis in the ancient storytelling tradition
- applying to this dataset other analytical techniques from digital humanities.
