Mitochondrial Disorders (‘mito’) are a large group of rare diseases with a range of presentations. More severe in children, adult presentations tend to be chronic and debilitating.

Hosted by the Australian Institute of Health Innovation in partnership with the Mito Foundation, this project will address problems people with mito have with accessing general health care (eg GPs) when many health professionals have not heard of their rare disease.

The project will coproduce and test a general management plan for adults living with mito (the Mito-Plan). The successful candidate will develop and conduct a subproject to evaluate the plan from a health professional point of view.

This will be a mixed methods study using validated survey instruments (quantitative methods) and interviews (qualitative methods).

GPs and allied health professionals (eg physios, dieticians) of participants of the main study who are trialling the Mito-Plans will be invited. Data collection will evaluate changes in their confidence dealing with a person with a rare disease, and changes in their knowledge of mito specifically and rare diseases in general.

Findings will be integrated into the main study to inform any changes to the design of the Mito-Plan.
